Election Commission Approves One-Month Extension for UP Voter Roll Revision

The Election Commission of India has officially approved a significant one-month extension to the deadline for submitting claims and objections against the draft electoral rolls for Uttar Pradesh. This draft was initially published on January 6 as part of the second phase of the special intensive revision of the state's voters' list.

Revised Timeline and Final Publication Date

As a direct result of this extension, the final electoral rolls for Uttar Pradesh will now be published on April 10, a notable shift from the previously scheduled date of March 6. This marks the third extension granted for the special intensive revision timeframe in Uttar Pradesh, highlighting the complexities involved in the voter list update process.

Background of Previous Extensions

The timeline adjustments began last year when the Election Commission deferred the publication of the state's draft roll from December 26 to December 31. Subsequently, the deadline was extended to January 6, with the period for accepting claims and objections set from January 6 to February 6. In a notification issued on Thursday, the EC stated that it carefully considered a request from the Uttar Pradesh chief electoral officer for an extension. After evaluating other relevant factors, the commission decided to grant additional time, extending the filing of claims and objections up to March 6, replacing the earlier deadline of February 6.

Updated Schedule for Claims and Objections Disposal

According to the latest revised schedule:

  • The notice phase, decision on enumeration forms, and disposal of claims and objections filed in Uttar Pradesh will continue until March 27.
  • Checking of health parameters of the electoral roll is slated for completion by April 3.
  • This will be followed by the final publication of the roll on April 10.

In contrast, the previous schedule allowed for the filing of claims and objections only until February 6, with the notice period and disposal of these claims and objections permitted until February 27. It had originally scheduled the final publication of the roll for March 6.

This extension ensures a more thorough and inclusive revision process, allowing adequate time for voters to verify and correct their details in the electoral rolls, thereby strengthening the democratic framework in Uttar Pradesh.
