Kerala Election Authorities Launch Investigation into Palakkad Cash Distribution Allegations
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala's Chief Electoral Officer has confirmed that election authorities will thoroughly examine potential violations of the Representation of the People Act and Model Code of Conduct in connection with cash-for-vote allegations emerging from Palakkad district.
Flying Squad Deployed Following Media Reports
Chief Electoral Officer Rathan U Kelkar revealed that district election authorities swiftly deployed a flying squad to investigate allegations that money was being distributed to voters as part of assembly election activities. The complaint specifically alleged that cash distribution occurred on Wednesday in the Theruvakkurissi area of Kannadi panchayat in Palakkad, with the apparent intention of influencing voter behavior.
The investigation was initiated based on media reports that brought these serious allegations to light. Election officials acted promptly to verify the claims through on-ground verification by specialized election monitoring teams.
Key Witness Statement Contradicts Allegations
The flying squad conducted detailed inquiries at the location and recorded the statement of Devu, a 65-year-old local resident who had been cited in media reports as having received money from BJP workers. Contrary to the initial allegations, Devu explicitly denied receiving any money from political workers, creating a significant discrepancy between the complaint and witness testimony.
Despite this contradictory evidence from the primary witness mentioned in the complaint, election authorities have determined that the seriousness of the allegations warrants continued scrutiny.
District Collector Orders Detailed Probe
The District Collector, who also serves as the District Election Officer, has emphasized that a more comprehensive investigation is necessary given the gravity of the cash-for-vote complaint. Officials have stated that the preliminary findings and report have been shared with election observers and police authorities for coordinated review and potential further action.
Election officials have clarified that any final decisions regarding potential violations or disciplinary actions will be made only after a thorough review of all investigation findings. The process includes:
- Detailed analysis of flying squad reports
- Consultation with election observers
- Coordination with police authorities
- Legal assessment of potential Model Code of Conduct violations
This investigation comes at a critical time during the election period, with authorities demonstrating heightened vigilance against any attempts to influence voters through improper means. The election commission has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring free and fair elections across Kerala.
