The Election Commission is set to publish the first supplementary list of voters in Kolkata this weekend, as confirmed by special roll observer Subrata Gupta on Tuesday. This announcement follows a crucial meeting chaired by the chief justice of the Calcutta High Court, highlighting the coordinated efforts to ensure electoral integrity.
Timeline for Voter List Publication
Subrata Gupta expressed optimism about the release, stating, "We hope that the supplementary list will be published on Friday or Saturday." This move aims to update the voter rolls ahead of upcoming elections, addressing any omissions or errors in the existing lists.
Judicial Oversight and Tribunal Formation
Regarding appeals from individuals excluded from the supplementary lists, Gupta noted that the Calcutta High Court will finalize the selection of judges for a dedicated tribunal within the next two to three days. "The Calcutta High Court will inform us about the judges selected for the tribunal in the next two-three days. After that, we will make arrangements on behalf of the state government before they come," he explained. This tribunal will be responsible for hearing and disposing of appeals, ensuring a fair and transparent process.
Case Disposal and Judicial Efficiency
In a related development, judicial officers have been actively working to clear a backlog of cases. Approximately 20 lakh pending cases have been disposed of so far, demonstrating significant progress in the judicial system. Around 705 judicial officers have been appointed to adjudicate over 60 lakh cases marked as 'Under Adjudication,' with an impressive rate of 1.5 to 2 lakh cases being cleared every day. This efficiency is crucial for maintaining the rule of law and supporting electoral processes.
The Election Commission's initiative, coupled with judicial efforts, underscores a commitment to democratic principles and legal accountability in Kolkata. Stakeholders are advised to stay updated as the supplementary list is released and the tribunal becomes operational.
