Polling Personnel Undertake Epic 16-Hour Journey to Remote Samden Booth
In a remarkable display of electoral dedication, polling teams from Darjeeling have embarked on an arduous 16-hour expedition to reach Samden, West Bengal's highest and most remote polling station. Located 78 kilometers from Darjeeling at an altitude exceeding 7,500 feet, this polling booth serves just 191 registered voters, yet requires extraordinary logistical efforts to ensure democratic participation.
Grueling Journey Through Mountainous Terrain
The polling personnel commenced their mission from the district collection center, undertaking what officials describe as one of the most challenging election logistics operations in the state. Their journey combines extensive road travel with an 8-kilometer trek through steep, forested mountain paths that are inaccessible to conventional vehicles.
Darjeeling Sub-Divisional Officer Banomali Roy explained the meticulous planning behind this operation: "The polling parties have departed for the Ramban polling station, which serves as an intermediate temporary storage point. From there, they will proceed toward Samden Forest Primary School under Bijanbari block, reaching their final destination the following day."
The challenging terrain necessitated a hybrid approach to transportation. While some sections were covered on foot, ponies were deployed to ferry both personnel and election materials across the most difficult stretches of the route. This combination of walking and animal transport represents a unique solution to the geographical challenges of conducting elections in this remote region.
Security and Logistical Preparations
Authorities have implemented comprehensive security arrangements for the team undertaking this demanding journey. Roy emphasized that all necessary measures have been established to ensure smooth and secure polling operations despite the remote location.
"There are 191 voters at this booth, and we have put in place all required security protocols to guarantee a peaceful and orderly voting process," Roy stated, highlighting the administration's commitment to electoral integrity even in the most challenging environments.
A Unique Polling Experience
For the election personnel involved, this assignment represents an extraordinary professional experience. Ishan Bomzon, an Income Tax Department employee participating in the polling team, described the mission with evident enthusiasm.
"This is truly a unique experience," Bomzon remarked. "I had heard about using horses for election duties in remote areas, but this is my first actual encounter with such arrangements. The extensive trekking involved makes this feel more like an adventurous expedition than conventional poll duty. It's genuinely exciting."
The journey to Samden exemplifies the extraordinary efforts undertaken by election authorities to ensure that every eligible voter, regardless of geographical isolation, can exercise their democratic right. This 16-hour expedition through challenging mountain terrain demonstrates the lengths to which polling teams will go to uphold electoral democracy in even the most remote corners of West Bengal.
