Puducherry Assembly Elections 2026: A High-Stakes Democratic Exercise

The Union territory of Puducherry is poised for a significant democratic event as it prepares for assembly polls on Thursday, April 9, 2026. Chief Electoral Officer P. Jawahar, addressing the media on Wednesday, expressed optimism about voter participation, projecting that the election machinery anticipates a polling percentage exceeding 90%. This marks a notable increase from the 82.2% turnout recorded during the 2021 assembly elections, reflecting heightened civic engagement.

Electoral Preparations and Voter Demographics

Following a special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls, approximately 8% of voters were removed from the list, streamlining the process for the upcoming polls. Voting will commence at 7 am across the territory, with a total of 294 candidates contesting in 30 constituencies. These constituencies are distributed as follows: 23 in Puducherry, five in Karaikal, and one each in Mahe and Yanam.

The electorate comprises 9.5 lakh voters, including 5.03 lakh women, 4.46 lakh men, and 140 individuals identifying as third gender. To facilitate voting, 1,099 polling booths have been established, featuring 30 all-women booths, 15 youth-managed booths, two booths managed by people with disabilities (PwD), and two unique booths located in heritage buildings, showcasing the territory's commitment to inclusivity and cultural preservation.

Political Alliances and Key Contenders

The electoral battle is primarily between two major coalitions. The All India NR Congress (AINRC)-led NDA government is seeking a second consecutive term, with its alliance including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), AIADMK, and LJK. Seat distribution within this coalition sees AINRC contesting 16 seats, BJP 10, and AIADMK and LJK two each.

On the opposing side, the Congress-led INDIA bloc is vigorously campaigning to regain power. Their strategy involves Congress contesting 16 seats, DMK 13, and VCK one, indicating a concerted effort to challenge the incumbent administration.

Enforcement Against Electoral Malpractices

To ensure a free and fair election, the election department has implemented stringent measures. Thus far, seizures worth Rs 8.4 crore have been made, including gold valuables, liquor, freebies, and cash intended to influence voters. Additionally, disciplinary actions have been taken against government servants involved in political activities, with nine suspended and another nine facing proceedings for violations.

International Observers and Technological Initiatives

A delegation of nine officials from six countries—Kyrgyzstan, Ivory Coast, Moldova, Mongolia, Guyana, and Bhutan—has arrived in Puducherry to observe the polling process at select stations, highlighting the global interest in India's democratic practices.

Technological advancements play a crucial role in this election. The election machinery has launched the Meipporul 2.0 application to combat fake news and misinformation. Citizens are urged to adhere to the mantra: "Think, verify, and act." The cybersecurity wing has already removed 113 misleading social media posts. Furthermore, the C-Vigil app has been effective, with 76 out of 84 complaints resolved within the 100-minute deadline, demonstrating efficiency in addressing electoral grievances.
