Pune Election Officials Uncover Voter Bribery Scheme with Washing Machines and Liquor
Poll officials in Pimpri Chinchwad have conducted a major raid ahead of the civic elections. They seized a variety of items intended for distribution among voters. The seized goods included washing machines, liquor bottles, and empty cartons of dinner sets. Officials believe these items were meant to lure voters in violation of election rules.
Raids Follow Multiple Complaints
The election department launched the raid after receiving several complaints. A senior official confirmed that thirteen cases have been registered with the city police in recent days. These cases include five non-cognisable offences and eight cognisable offences. The complaints cover a range of issues from voter bribery to threats against candidates.
Some candidates reported being threatened by rivals or their supporters for contesting the civic polls. Other cases involve violations of the model code of conduct. These violations include the installation of banners and flexes without proper permission. The election department is taking all complaints seriously to ensure a fair election process.
Washing Machines Seized in Nighttime Interception
On Monday night around 10:30 PM, a flying squad from the election department intercepted a vehicle in the Ganraj Colony area of Rahatni. The interception followed a specific complaint about washing machines being distributed to voters. Officials found nineteen washing machines in the vehicle and seized them immediately.
An investigation is currently underway to determine the full scope of this bribery attempt. The returning officer for the D zonal office, Anil Pawar, stated that an inquiry is being conducted. Pawar oversees wards 25, 26, 28, and 29. He assured that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
Allegations of Assault and Intimidation
In a separate incident on Monday, family members of an NCP candidate alleged assault and threats by supporters of a rival BJP aspirant. The men reportedly barged into the candidate's residence. This intrusion was linked to the candidate's decision to contest the civic election.
Another incident occurred on December 30th. Supporters of an NCP candidate allegedly assaulted another aspirant for filing a nomination. These events highlight the tense atmosphere surrounding the upcoming civic elections in Pune.
Election officials are urging all parties to adhere to the model code of conduct. They emphasize the importance of maintaining law and order during the election period. The seized items and registered cases serve as a warning against any attempts to influence voters illegally.
