Tamil Nadu Elections: EVMs Delivered by Horseback as EC Ensures Smooth Polling
As political parties across Tamil Nadu fell silent on Wednesday, marking the conclusion of a month-long, high-intensity campaign period, the Election Commission of India shifted into maximum operational gear. With polling scheduled for Thursday, the commission launched a comprehensive final push to guarantee a seamless and secure voting process throughout the state.
Massive Security Deployment for Polling Day
Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik announced an extensive security arrangement, detailing the deployment of 300 companies of paramilitary forces alongside more than 83,800 state police personnel. This formidable contingent has been strategically positioned to safeguard every polling station, ensuring law and order and preventing any potential disruptions during the crucial electoral exercise.
Logistical Feats: EVMs Reach Remote Voters
In a remarkable demonstration of logistical commitment, election officials undertook extraordinary measures to deliver Electronic Voting Machines to isolated and inaccessible areas. For the Vellimalai Estate polling booth in the Varusanadu region under the Andipatti assembly segment, officials embarked on a challenging 65-kilometer uphill journey from Theni. This effort was dedicated to serving a mere five registered voters, highlighting the principle of inclusive democracy.
Similarly, for the Oothukadu polling station in Bodinayakanur, which caters to 307 voters but lacks any motorable road access, EVMs were transported through dense forest terrain on horseback. These efforts underscore the Election Commission's dedication to ensuring that every eligible citizen, regardless of geographical barriers, has the opportunity to participate in the democratic process.
Vigilance Against Electoral Malpractices
Concurrently, flying squads and surveillance teams have significantly intensified their vigilance across the state. Their primary focus is to prevent last-minute distribution of cash or other inducements that could influence voters, thereby upholding the integrity of the election. All EVM dispatches to polling stations are being conducted under stringent security protocols to prevent tampering or unauthorized access.
Voter Movement and International Observation
Transportation hubs, including bus stands, railway stations, and airports, witnessed substantial crowds as voters traveled back to their native constituencies to exercise their franchise. Numerous voters also arrived from overseas, returning specifically to cast their votes and engage in the electoral process.
Adding an international dimension, delegates from multiple countries visited Chennai as part of the Election Commission's international election visitors programme.
