The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has raised serious allegations regarding security lapses at the EVM strong room in Kolkata, following a controversy over midnight access. West Bengal Minister Shashi Panja claimed that individuals were seen inside a sealed strong room and questioned why proper intimation was not given to all political parties. The issue escalated after a reported attempt by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to access the strong room, which was denied citing election rules.
Midnight Access Controversy
The controversy erupted after a midnight political showdown involving Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s reported attempt to enter the strong room. The Chief Electoral Commission has reiterated strict guidelines governing strong room access, stating that all procedures are being followed under mandated security protocols. The TMC has questioned the CCTV monitoring and the overall security arrangements, demanding a thorough investigation.
Political Reactions
West Bengal Minister Shashi Panja stated, “There are serious lapses in the security of the EVM strong room. We have seen CCTV footage showing unauthorized individuals inside the sealed room. Why were other political parties not informed?” The BJP, on the other hand, has accused the TMC of attempting to tamper with the EVMs and has demanded strict action.
The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal denied any wrongdoing, stating that the strong rooms are fully monitored and all security protocols are in place. The CEO also clarified that the denial of entry to the Chief Minister was in line with the Election Commission’s guidelines.
Security Measures Tightened
Following the allegations, security has been tightened at the strong rooms in Kolkata. The Election Commission has deployed additional security personnel and increased CCTV surveillance to ensure the integrity of the EVMs. The TMC has staged protests outside the strong room, sharing CCTV footage that they claim shows irregularities.
The issue has become a major flashpoint in the ongoing West Bengal elections, with both the TMC and BJP trading charges. The Election Commission has assured that all necessary steps are being taken to maintain the sanctity of the electoral process.
