Trichy Election Officials Seize Rs 50 Lakh in Unaccounted Cash from TVK Candidate's Relative
In a significant crackdown on election-related financial irregularities, flying squads in Trichy district seized unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 50 lakh from a residence near Lalgudi on Thursday night. The operation was launched after district officials received a credible tip-off about a large sum of money being hoarded at the house of A Neelamegam, a relative of TVK's Lalgudi candidate Ku Pa Krishnan, located in Malpavanur village.
Swift Action by Election Authorities
Acting promptly on the intelligence, flying squad officials arrived at Neelamegam's house around 7 pm on Thursday and initiated a thorough inspection. During the search, they uncovered a bag stuffed with lakhs of rupees in one of the rooms. Since the flying squad is authorized to seize only up to Rs 10 lakh, officials immediately notified the income tax department to handle the larger amount.
Subsequently, I-T officers from Trichy rushed to the spot, accompanied by the returning officer and assistant returning officer for the constituency. The presence of these senior officials underscored the seriousness of the seizure and the need for a coordinated investigation.
Contradictory Statements and Seizure
Officials questioned the family members present at the residence, who provided contradictory answers regarding the source and purpose of the cash. As they failed to produce proper documentation to verify the legitimacy of the money, authorities proceeded to seize the entire Rs 50 lakh. The inability to account for the funds raised suspicions of potential election code violations or undisclosed income.
Further investigation is currently underway to determine the origins of the cash and whether it was intended for any illicit activities related to the ongoing election process. This incident highlights the vigilance of election monitoring bodies in curbing financial malpractices during polls.
