In the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, only two parties—Vijay's Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) and the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK)—fielded Brahmin candidates. According to early counting trends, both Brahmin candidates from the TVK are leading in their respective constituencies.
TVK Emerges as a Formidable Force
The TVK has emerged as a major force in the early counting trends from the April 23 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, leading in more than a hundred constituencies, as per the Election Commission of India data. The party has reported strong performances across northern, central, and southern districts, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Tirunelveli, and several delta regions. It has also made inroads into pockets of traditional Dravidian strongholds.
Strong Performance in Southern and Delta Districts
The TVK made a strong impact in southern districts, including Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi. TVK candidates were also leading in several constituencies in the delta districts, including Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai, as well as parts of Salem. In addition, the TVK made gains in several pockets of Kanyakumari, traditionally a Congress stronghold.
NTK Fielded Six Brahmin Candidates
The NTK, on the other hand, gave tickets to six Brahmin candidates. However, the party's overall performance in the elections has not been as strong as the TVK's. The NTK has been a consistent presence in Tamil Nadu politics, but the TVK's surge has pushed both the DMK and AIADMK to the margins in many constituencies.
Counting Underway, Final Results Expected by Evening
Counting is underway, and final results for all 234 constituencies are expected by late evening. The trends suggest a significant shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, with the TVK emerging as a key player. The BJP, meanwhile, is expected to retain Assam and may oust Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal, according to early trends.
