The 2026 Kerala Assembly Elections delivered a stunning blow to the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), with 13 out of 15 ministers from the incumbent cabinet suffering defeat at the polls. The United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a landslide victory, ending the LDF's term in power.
Massive Ministerial Losses
According to official results announced on 4 May 2026, the LDF faced its worst electoral performance in recent history. Of the 21 ministers in the outgoing cabinet, only two managed to retain their seats. The list of defeated ministers includes several senior leaders and key portfolios.
List of Defeated Ministers
- Pinarayi Vijayan - Chief Minister (defeated in Dharmadam constituency)

The only ministers who managed to retain their seats were P. Prasad (Electricity Minister) and M. M. Shashikumar (Co-operation Minister).
UDF Sweeps to Power
The UDF, led by the Indian National Congress, won a comfortable majority, securing over 100 seats in the 140-member assembly. The victory marks a return to power for the Congress-led coalition after five years of LDF rule.
Analysts attribute the LDF's defeat to anti-incumbency, internal dissent, and voter dissatisfaction over key issues such as unemployment and infrastructure development. The election saw a voter turnout of approximately 72%, with high enthusiasm in both urban and rural areas.
The new government is expected to be sworn in within the next week, with UDF leader Ramesh Chennithala likely to be the next Chief Minister.
