5 Crore Cases Pending in Indian Courts: Minister Highlights Reforms
5 Crore Cases Pending in Indian Courts: Minister

Ranchi: Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal on Sunday revealed that approximately 5 crore cases are pending across Indian courts. He detailed that the Supreme Court accounts for 70,000 pending cases, high courts for 26 to 27 lakh, and lower courts for 4.5 crore cases.

Measures to Reduce Pendency

Speaking at a programme titled '12 Years of Legislative Reform' in Ranchi, Meghwal highlighted the implementation of an ageing analysis system, which prioritizes older cases. He also emphasized alternative dispute resolution mechanisms such as mediation, conciliation, and arbitration as vital tools to reduce the burden on courts.

Demands for Tribunals

Responding to requests from advocates for establishing Central Administrative Tribunal and National Green Tribunal wings in Jharkhand, Meghwal urged them to submit a memorandum listing their specific needs.

Key Reforms by Union Government

Meghwal listed major reforms implemented by the central government, including Goods and Services Tax reforms, abrogation of Article 370, the Jan Vishwas Bill, and new criminal justice laws. He asserted that these measures have strengthened the legal and governance framework.

Women's Reservation and Delimitation

The minister expressed confidence that the Union government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, would ensure 50% reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies, despite the recent failure of the bill in Parliament. He noted that women have been striving for equality for over a century. He also stated that delimitation would proportionally increase states' representation at the national level.
