Government Expands Aadhaar Authentication to 100 Transport Services
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has expanded Aadhaar-based authentication from 58 to 100 online transport services, according to a notification issued on July 8, 2026. The move aims to streamline digital governance and reduce fraud in the transport sector.
Services Covered Under the Expansion
The expanded list includes key services such as driving license issuance, vehicle registration, and permit applications. All services are accessible via the Parivahan platform, which serves as the central portal for transport-related digital services. The notification states that the authentication process will be voluntary, and users can still opt for alternative identity documents.
Voluntary Use and Alternative Options
An official from MoRTH clarified, "Aadhaar authentication is not mandatory; citizens can continue to use other valid IDs like voter ID, passport, or PAN card." This ensures that the expansion does not create barriers for those without Aadhaar.
Impact on Digital Governance
The expansion is part of the government's broader faceless governance initiative, which seeks to minimize physical interactions and enhance transparency. By integrating Aadhaar, the transport department aims to eliminate duplicate or fake documents. According to MoRTH data, over 2.5 crore transactions have been processed through the Parivahan platform in the last fiscal year, and the expansion is expected to increase efficiency by 30%.
Technical Implementation and Security
The authentication uses a secure, encrypted channel to verify identity in real time. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) ensures that no biometric data is stored by the transport department. The system also includes a consent mechanism for users.
Reactions from Stakeholders
Transport sector experts have welcomed the move. "This will significantly reduce processing times and improve service delivery," said R. S. Sharma, a former UIDAI chairman. However, privacy advocates have urged the government to maintain strict safeguards. The MoRTH has assured that data protection protocols comply with the Supreme Court's 2018 judgment on Aadhaar.
