Ahmedabad Expands Pet Crematorium Services with Two New Facilities
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is significantly expanding its services for pet owners grieving the loss of their beloved companions. Responding to growing demand, the civic body has announced plans to construct two additional CNG-fired pet crematoriums in the city, with tenders already floated for the projects.
Growing Demand for Dignified Farewells
Since the Behrampura facility became operational earlier this year, it has already provided final rites for 108 dogs. Pet owners from Gandhinagar, Rajkot, and even Udaipur have traveled to Ahmedabad specifically to use this service, seeking a dignified farewell for their furry family members.
The emotional significance of these services cannot be overstated. For families like that of Ramchandra Vaghela, a sanitary sub-inspector with AMC's cattle nuisance control department, the cremation of their dog Tiger provided both heartache and closure. The family received Tiger's ashes in an earthen urn and later performed immersion rituals at Narayan Ghat along the Sabarmati Riverfront.
New Infrastructure Development
The AMC's Cattle Nuisance Control (CNC) department has decided to build two new crematoriums—one in the city's eastern part and another in the western zone—at a combined cost of Rs 60 lakh. This expansion directly addresses the convenience needs of pet owners across different areas of Ahmedabad.
The current Behrampura facility, built to meet strict health and environmental norms, features a chamber large enough to cremate three dogs simultaneously. Both primary and secondary chambers ensure odourless, clean cremations that comply with environmental regulations.
Community Response and Registration Requirements
The community response has been overwhelmingly positive, with 32 families making financial contributions totaling Rs 1.06 lakh to AMC in memory of their pets. This demonstrates the deep emotional connection people have with their animal companions and their appreciation for these services.
According to official statistics, 19,347 pet dogs have been registered with AMC by 17,017 owners. Registration papers are required at the time of booking a cremation slot, ensuring proper documentation and management of the services.
Looking Forward
The expansion of pet cremation services in Ahmedabad represents a significant step forward in recognizing the emotional bonds between humans and their animal companions. As pet ownership continues to grow across urban India, such facilities provide essential support during difficult times while maintaining environmental standards.
The new facilities will not only serve Ahmedabad residents but likely continue to attract pet owners from neighboring cities and states who seek compassionate end-of-life services for their beloved animals.
