NHAI Implements AI Dashcam Analytics to Enhance Highway Maintenance Across India

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to revolutionize highway maintenance by deploying advanced AI-powered dashcam analytics services (DAS) across approximately 40,000 kilometers of the national highway network. This strategic initiative targets sections currently under operation and maintenance contracts, aiming to address escalating public grievances regarding riding quality and road conditions.

Surge in Public Complaints Prompts Action

This decision comes in response to a significant increase in commuter complaints. According to recent data presented in the Rajya Sabha by the highway ministry, public complaints concerning the quality of highway construction and the condition of riding surfaces have surged by over 60% this year compared to the previous year. Specifically, complaints rose from 7,030 in 2024-25 to 11,340 by March 12 of this year. The ministry noted that 9,977 of these grievances have been resolved so far this year.

Comprehensive Monitoring System

For effective nationwide monitoring, NHAI has strategically divided the country into five distinct zones, with contracts awarded for a duration of two years. Dashcams will be installed in every highway patrol vehicle, capturing detailed recordings that include up to 30 different types of defects and anomalies on highways.

The primary focus areas for monitoring include:

  • Pavement condition: such as potholes, cracks, rutting, and surface deterioration.
  • Safety features: including faded lane markings, damaged crash barriers, and non-functional street lights.
  • Other critical issues: like water stagnation, missing drainage covers, vegetation growth, and the condition of bus bays.

AI Analytics and Rapid Reporting

The recorded data will be fed into a specialized IT platform equipped with dedicated modules for data management and AI analytics. This system is designed to generate comprehensive reports within a single day, accurately identifying defects and anomalies. Based on these reports, NHAI will issue precise instructions to the concerned agencies and officials for prompt rectification of the issues.

Enhanced Safety and Regular Inspections

Beyond pavement and infrastructure defects, the AI dashcam system will also identify various safety concerns, such as illegal median openings, unauthorized signboards, encroachments, and illegal parking. To ensure thorough oversight, surveys will be conducted at least once a week, with nighttime inspections scheduled at least once a month to assess the performance of road signage, pavement markings, road studs, and highway lighting.

This proactive approach by NHAI represents a significant step towards improving highway safety and riding quality across India, leveraging cutting-edge technology to address public concerns and enhance maintenance efficiency.
