Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Unveils Rs 18,518 Crore Budget with No Tax Hike

In a significant move, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Standing Committee has proposed a revised budget of Rs 18,518 crore for the fiscal year 2026-27. This marks an increase of Rs 1,500 crore from the Municipal Commissioner's initial draft of Rs 17,018 crore. The budget, presented on Tuesday, focuses on strengthening basic facilities and preparing the city for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2030, all without any hike in taxes for citizens.

Vision for a Modern Ahmedabad: Beggarless, Nallah-Mukt, Zero-Waste City

The revised draft budget outlines a bold vision to transform Ahmedabad into a "beggarless, nallah-mukt, zero-waste city." Key initiatives include the development of the 'Ahmedabad EYE' on the Sabarmati Riverfront, the establishment of the city's first English medium secondary school, and the implementation of a floating solar system on water bodies. These projects aim to enhance urban living and sustainability.

Standing Committee chairman Devang Dani emphasized the participatory nature of the budget, which incorporated over 2,600 public suggestions. "With the city set to host CWG 2030, this budget ensures basic facilities for every citizen," Dani stated, highlighting the focus on inclusive development.

Infrastructure and Basic Facilities: Major Investments in Eastern Ahmedabad

A substantial portion of the budget is allocated to infrastructure development, particularly in the eastern parts of the city. Projects such as Ahmedabad Haat, glow gardens, hospitals, and sports complexes are proposed to boost local amenities and tourism. Additionally, Rs 120 crore has been earmarked for approved new draft Town Planning (TP) schemes, providing essential facilities in final TP schemes and developing smart final TP schemes.

Areas like Bhadaj, Ognaj, Ghuma, Jagatpur, Chainpur, Chiloda, Kathwada, Lambha, Gyaspur, and Nikol will benefit from improved roads, water supply, sewage systems, green spaces, and public amenities. Another Rs 115 crore is set aside for rehabilitating drainage and water networks across all seven zones of Ahmedabad, addressing issues of corrosion and inefficiency in existing systems.

Innovative Renewable Energy: Floating Solar System on Water Bodies

In a pioneering step towards environmental sustainability, the AMC plans to install a floating solar project on the city's lakes and the Sabarmati River. With an investment of around Rs 50 crore in the first phase, this initiative will generate clean energy using unused water bodies. The project will feature eco-friendly technologies, such as no microplastics and 100% recycled floaters, to reduce water evaporation and prevent algae growth, thereby maintaining water quality.

Dani explained, "This project will propel AMC towards energy self-sufficiency and establish Ahmedabad as a leader in renewable energy." A 10 MW solar plant is planned initially, marking a significant shift from ground or rooftop installations to innovative water-based solutions.

Healthcare and Other Key Proposals

The budget also addresses healthcare needs with a proposal to establish a Super Speciality Hospital in the Viratnagar ward of Nikol Assembly constituency. Allocated Rs 50 crore, this hospital will offer advanced treatments for heart disease, kidney disease, cancer, diabetes, neuro, and orthopaedics, elevating the city's healthcare sector.

However, not all proposals made the cut. The Standing Committee rejected a Rs 32 crore plan for a modern slaughterhouse in Shahwadi-Behrampura, citing public opposition. Dani confirmed, "We have cancelled the proposal, and there will be no future discussion on this project."

Conclusion: A Budget Focused on Growth and Sustainability

Overall, the AMC's Rs 18,518 crore budget for 2026-27 prioritizes citizen welfare, infrastructure development, and environmental initiatives in the run-up to Commonwealth Games 2030. With no tax increases and a strong emphasis on basic facilities, this proposal aims to make Ahmedabad a model of urban progress and sustainability.
