AMC Pre-Monsoon Plan: 64,013 Catchpits Cleaned in Ahmedabad

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched a comprehensive pre-monsoon action plan to combat waterlogging across the city. As part of this initiative, catchpits and stormwater manholes are being systematically cleaned to ensure efficient drainage during the rainy season.

Catchpit Cleaning Drive

AMC has identified a total of 72,586 catchpits distributed across various zones. The zone-wise breakdown includes 9,891 in the North Zone, 9,093 in the South Zone, 9,461 in the East Zone, 6,972 in the Central Zone, 15,777 in the West Zone, 13,791 in the North-West Zone, and 7,601 in the South-West Zone. In the first phase, 64,013 catchpits have been cleaned. Zone-wise, this includes 9,536 in the North Zone, 7,534 in the South Zone, 8,990 in the East Zone, 6,261 in the Central Zone, 13,131 in the West Zone, 11,032 in the North-West Zone, and 7,529 in the South-West Zone.

Stormwater Manholes Upgraded

To further enhance drainage capacity, the AMC has increased the number of operational stormwater manholes. Previously, the city had 24,004 such manholes. With the addition of 2,681 new manholes, the total now stands at 26,685. The zone-wise distribution of manholes is as follows: North Zone has 2,761, South Zone has 2,847, East Zone has 4,731, Central Zone has 1,882, West Zone has 3,267, North-West Zone has 7,465, and South-West Zone has 3,732.

Continuous Monitoring and Rapid Response

Officials stated that stormwater teams and field staff will remain active in all zones throughout the monsoon season. Continuous monitoring, pre-monsoon checks, and special arrangements for rapid on-site response have also been planned to ensure that rainwater drains off quickly and waterlogging is minimized.
