Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced on Wednesday that the proposed 40-kilometer tunnel road for Bengaluru will be approved at the next state cabinet meeting. The project is the centerpiece of a broader mobility strategy to address the city's chronic traffic congestion.
Project Details and Timeline
The tunnel road, estimated to cost around Rs 40,000 crore, will connect the northern and southern parts of Bengaluru, running from Hebbal to Silk Board. According to CM Shivakumar, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is ready, and the cabinet will formally clear it in the upcoming session. "The tunnel road is a game-changer for Bengaluru's traffic," he said, adding that construction could begin within six months of approval.
Mobility Strategy and Impact
The tunnel road is part of a larger mobility plan that includes expanding the metro network, improving bus services, and implementing smart traffic management systems. Officials estimate that the tunnel will reduce travel time between Hebbal and Silk Board from over two hours to just 20 minutes. The project is expected to be completed in four to five years.
Funding and Land Acquisition
The state government will fund the project through a mix of state budgets, central assistance, and public-private partnerships. Land acquisition for the tunnel has been streamlined, with the government identifying 12 key locations for entry and exit points. CM Shivakumar assured that compensation for affected landowners would be as per the government's land acquisition policy.
Political and Public Reaction
The announcement has drawn mixed reactions. While citizens' groups have welcomed the initiative, some experts have raised concerns about the tunnel's ventilation and safety systems. "Proper planning is crucial to avoid issues like flooding and air quality problems," said a transport analyst. The opposition has also questioned the project's feasibility and cost, demanding a white paper on Bengaluru's traffic management.
Next Steps
After cabinet approval, the government will invite tenders for construction. The tunnel road is expected to be built in phases, with the first phase covering 15 km. CM Shivakumar emphasized that the project is a priority and will be monitored closely to ensure timely completion.
