Bengaluru Residents Voice Grievances on Garbage, Encroachments at GBA Meet

In a significant public interaction held on Thursday, residents of Bengaluru poured in numerous complaints addressing critical civic issues, including garbage collection problems and footpath encroachments. The session was presided over by Maheshwar Rao, the chief commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), who listened attentively to the concerns raised by the community.

Immediate Action Promised on Public Complaints

During the meeting, Maheshwar Rao assured the complainants that the GBA is committed to taking swift action. He stated that at least 20% of the complaints would be resolved within the next two to three days. To ensure accountability and continuous improvement, Rao announced plans for monthly follow-up sessions. "We are planning to do a follow-up every month. If an issue is not resolved and the complaint is repeated, we will ask the relevant official to report on why it is not done," he emphasized.

Specific Issues Highlighted by Residents

The GBA chief specifically acknowledged problems related to garbage collection timings, which have been a persistent headache for many Bengalureans. "People unable to hand over waste to autos are throwing it. We will look at resolving this," Rao said, highlighting the urgency of streamlining waste management processes.

Residents also brought up other pressing matters. Gayathri Ashok from New Thippasandra raised concerns about poorly maintained parks and playgrounds. "Playgrounds with no lighting are creating a security threat for nearby residents," she pointed out, urging for immediate attention to public safety.

Another resident from Hombegowda Nagar highlighted the issue of uncontrolled commercialisation in Wilson Garden, which has led to congestion and encroachments, further deteriorating the quality of life in the area.

Past Initiatives and Current Challenges

Some attendees recalled a similar public interaction initiative conducted in December 2024, expressing mixed feelings about its outcomes. One complainant shared with TOI, "Though our complaint was followed up promptly with a written reply, the issue was not resolved. The mechanism of receiving and processing complaints is great, but there is no execution in many cases." This resident added that her issue from 2024 remains unresolved, underscoring the need for more effective implementation of solutions.

The public interaction served as a platform for citizens to voice their frustrations and seek redressal from the authorities. With Maheshwar Rao's assurances of prompt action and regular follow-ups, there is hope that these grievances will be addressed more efficiently in the future, contributing to a cleaner and better-managed Bengaluru.
