Bengaluru Intensifies Cleanliness Campaign Ahead of National Survey
The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has initiated a comprehensive strategy to significantly enhance its performance in the upcoming Swachh Survekshan 2025-26. This move comes as a direct response to the city's disappointing 36th position out of 40 major cities with populations exceeding one million in the previous assessment cycle.
Strategic Appointment of Six Influential Brand Ambassadors
In a significant development on Monday, GBA, in collaboration with Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML), officially inducted six prominent personalities as brand ambassadors for the cleanliness drive. The ceremony took place at the historic Town Hall, with GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao presiding alongside senior BSWML officials and commissioners from various city corporations.
The newly appointed ambassadors represent diverse fields and bring substantial influence to the campaign:
- Manajamma Jogati - Padma Shri awardee and renowned transgender folk artist
- Aniruddha Jatkar - Popular Kannada film actor
- KM Nagaraj - Social worker and prominent KPCC leader
- Arun Pai - NGO leader and community activist
- Abhilash Nair - Environmental NGO representative
- Aniruddh Dutt - Social development organization head
Addressing Past Performance and Future Goals
The urgency of this initiative stems from Bengaluru's underwhelming performance in the previous Swachh Survekshan, where it ranked near the bottom among India's largest urban centers. The annual assessment, conducted by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, evaluates cities across multiple cleanliness and sanitation parameters.
The brand ambassadors will play a crucial role in mobilizing citizen participation, promoting waste segregation practices, and fostering community engagement in cleanliness initiatives throughout Bengaluru. Their diverse backgrounds are expected to help reach different demographic segments across the metropolitan area.
Comprehensive Approach to Urban Sanitation
Beyond the ambassador program, GBA and BSWML are implementing a multi-faceted approach that includes infrastructure improvements, public awareness campaigns, and enhanced waste collection systems. The collaboration between government agencies and civil society representatives signals a concerted effort to transform Bengaluru's urban sanitation landscape.
As the city prepares for the rigorous Swachh Survekshan evaluation, officials emphasize that sustainable cleanliness requires ongoing public cooperation alongside administrative measures. The ambassador initiative represents a strategic investment in changing public behavior and attitudes toward waste management and urban hygiene.
