Over 3,000 Teachers to Be Dismissed for Fake Degrees in Bihar

The Bihar government has announced the dismissal of more than 3,000 teachers who were found to possess fake degrees and forged certificates. The decision follows a thorough investigation by the state's vigilance department, which uncovered widespread fraud in teacher recruitment. Education Department officials confirmed that the dismissals will be carried out in phases, with the first batch of termination orders expected within a week.

Vigilance Probe Uncovers Widespread Fraud

The vigilance probe, initiated in early 2025, examined the credentials of over 10,000 teachers hired across the state. It revealed that 3,142 teachers had submitted fraudulent documents, including fake bachelor's and master's degrees, as well as forged training certificates. According to a senior vigilance officer, "The investigation found a well-organized racket involving middlemen and some education officials who facilitated the submission of fake documents." The state government has also ordered a parallel inquiry into the role of recruitment agencies and exam centers.

Impact on Schools and Students

The mass dismissal will affect hundreds of government schools, particularly in rural areas where these teachers were employed. The Education Department has assured that alternative arrangements will be made to ensure minimal disruption to students' studies. "We are preparing a list of qualified substitute teachers from the existing pool and will also initiate a fresh recruitment drive through a transparent process," said a department spokesperson. However, parent-teacher associations have expressed concern over the sudden vacuum, especially in subjects like science and mathematics.

Legal Action and Recovery of Salaries

Apart from dismissal, the government plans to file criminal cases against the implicated teachers and recover salaries paid to them since their appointment. Officials estimate that the fraudulent teachers have drawn salaries totaling over ₹500 crore in the past few years. "We will send notices to each individual demanding repayment, and if they fail to comply, we will attach their properties," warned the vigilance officer. The state has also blacklisted these teachers from future government employment.

Reforms in Teacher Recruitment

In response to the scandal, the Bihar government has announced stricter verification protocols for all future teacher recruitment. This includes mandatory digital verification of degrees through university portals, biometric authentication at the time of joining, and background checks by the vigilance department. The state also plans to create a centralized database of all certified teachers to prevent similar fraud. "We are committed to ensuring that only genuine and qualified teachers educate our children," said the Education Minister.
