BMC Unveils Massive Rs 16,092 Crore Budget for Mumbai's Water and Sewerage Infrastructure Overhaul
In a significant move to address the growing water needs of India's financial capital, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has presented a robust budget with a sharp focus on enhancing water supply and sewerage systems. The civic body has earmarked a substantial capital expenditure of Rs 16,092 crore specifically for upgrading Mumbai's water infrastructure over the next four to five years.
Ambitious Plan to Increase Water Supply by 800 Million Litres Daily
The primary objective of this massive budgetary allocation is to create the necessary infrastructure to boost Mumbai's daily water supply by approximately 800 million litres per day (MLD). This ambitious target aims to bridge the persistent demand-supply gap that has plagued the city for years, ensuring a more reliable and adequate water supply for its burgeoning population.
The budget breakdown reveals a comprehensive approach:
- Water Supply Projects: Rs 7,805 crore allocated for enhancing and expanding the water distribution network.
- Sewerage Treatment: Rs 5,690 crore dedicated to modernizing and improving sewage treatment facilities.
- Sewerage Project and Operation: Rs 2,569.3 crore set aside for ongoing sewerage projects and operational maintenance.
Groundbreaking 200 MLD Desalination Plant at Manori
A cornerstone of this infrastructure push is the proposed 200 MLD desalination project at Manori, which represents a strategic shift toward developing climate-resilient water sources. This innovative project includes a provision for future expansion, potentially increasing its capacity to 400 MLD to meet long-term needs.
The work for this desalination plant has already been awarded, and preliminary activities are currently underway. With an estimated completion period of 48 months, Phase I of this project is expected to augment Mumbai's water supply by 200 MLD upon its conclusion. To support this critical initiative, the BMC has proposed a provision of Rs 500 crore in the 2026-27 budget, ensuring sustained financial backing.
Building a Sustainable and Resilient Future for Mumbai
Beyond merely increasing water quantity, the BMC's budget emphasizes the development of a sustainable sewerage management system. This holistic approach aims to not only improve water availability but also enhance the overall environmental health of the city by treating and managing wastewater more effectively.
The comprehensive strategy outlined in the BMC budget underscores a commitment to transforming Mumbai's water infrastructure, making it more robust, reliable, and capable of supporting the city's future growth while addressing current challenges in water scarcity and sanitation.
