BMTC Expands Reach with New AC Bus Services to Satellite Towns
In a significant move to enhance urban connectivity, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has launched air-conditioned bus services to the satellite towns of Ramanagara and Kanakapura. This initiative, branded as 'Vajra Vistara', marks a notable expansion of BMTC's operational jurisdiction, now extending up to 40 kilometers from the city limits, beyond the Greater Bengaluru Area.
Launch and Route Details
Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy officially flagged off the new services at the Ramanagara bus stand. A total of 14 AC buses have been deployed across two key routes, designed as express trips with limited stops to ensure faster and more efficient travel for commuters.
Majestic to Ramanagara Route: This service features six stops with a fare of Rs 95. Notably, five of these stops are located between Majestic and the NICE Road Junction. Once the bus enters the Bengaluru–Mysuru access-controlled highway, it will not halt for nearly 35 kilometers until reaching Ramanagara, optimizing travel time.
Banashankari TTMC to Kanakapura Route: Covering a distance of 50 kilometers, this service has a fare of Rs 90 and includes seven stops. Key stops along the route are Kaggalipura, Harohalli, Dayananda Sagar College, and Jain University Gate, catering to daily commuters traveling for work and education.
Strategic Positioning and Future Plans
BMTC has strategically positioned these services in the premium AC segment to avoid direct competition with the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), which operates numerous non-AC buses on similar corridors. Officials highlighted a growing demand for comfortable and air-conditioned travel options, making this a viable addition to the public transport network.
The service to Kanakapura is particularly significant as the town lacks a rail link, making it heavily reliant on road transport. The new route is expected to benefit commuters by integrating with Namma Metro, with stops at key metro stations such as Banashankari, Konanakunte Cross, Talaghattapura, and Silk Institute.
Looking ahead, BMTC officials have indicated plans to conduct joint surveys with KSRTC before introducing additional routes. There is also potential for deploying AC electric buses in the future, aligning with sustainable transport goals.
Expansion Beyond Current Routes
With this expansion, BMTC is exploring further extensions to other satellite towns, including Malur, Solur, and Chikkaballapur. This move reflects the corporation's commitment to improving connectivity and addressing the commuting needs of a growing metropolitan region.
The 'Vajra Vistara' brand symbolizes BMTC's evolving role in regional transport, offering a reliable and comfortable alternative for long-distance commuters within the Bengaluru periphery.
