The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a five-year extension of the SARTHAK-PDS scheme with a total outlay of Rs 25,530 crore. The decision aims to modernize the public distribution system (PDS) through technology-led reforms, enhancing efficiency and reducing leakages.
Key Features of the Extended Scheme
The SARTHAK-PDS scheme, which stands for System for Advanced Reforms and Technology-enabled Holistic Administration of the Public Distribution System, focuses on leveraging digital tools to streamline operations. The extension will run from 2026 to 2031, ensuring continued support for states and union territories in implementing tech-based solutions.
Technology-Driven Reforms
The scheme promotes the use of Aadhaar-based authentication, GPS tracking of food grain transport, and online monitoring of fair price shops. These measures are expected to minimize diversion and ensure that subsidized food reaches intended beneficiaries.
- Integration of e-PoS (electronic Point of Sale) devices for real-time transaction recording.
- Digitization of ration card databases to prevent duplicate or fake entries.
- Automated grievance redressal systems for beneficiaries.
Financial Allocation
The Rs 25,530 crore outlay includes central assistance for states to upgrade infrastructure, procure hardware, and train personnel. The funding will be released in phases based on performance milestones.
Impact on Beneficiaries
Over 80 crore beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act are expected to benefit from reduced leakages and improved service delivery. The scheme also aims to empower states with data analytics tools for better demand forecasting and inventory management.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision, highlighting the government's commitment to leveraging technology for social welfare. The extension builds on the success of the pilot phase, which saw a significant drop in irregularities in participating districts.
The Cabinet's approval underscores the government's focus on reforming the PDS to ensure food security and transparency. With the extended scheme, India moves closer to a fully digitized and accountable public distribution network.
