Gurgaon: With just one day remaining for the self-enumeration phase of the nationwide house-listing exercise under Census 2027, only 2,45,885 households among a population of around 3 crore in Haryana have completed the online process so far. The self-enumeration window, which opened on April 16, will close on April 30, and there are currently no plans to extend the deadline.
Despite being home to several Fortune 500 companies, startups, and major IT firms, Gurgaon has recorded only 12,607 self-enumerations, while Faridabad stands at 14,602. In contrast, Karnal (22,836) and Sirsa (22,845) are leading the state in participation. At the bottom are Nuh (1,897) and Palwal (3,134).
Residents have flagged that the website (se.census.gov.in) has frequently malfunctioned, with OTPs often not being generated. “I tried multiple times from my laptop and phone but could not complete the process,” said Mukesh Sharma of Sector 50.
Haryana census director Lalit Jain urged residents to actively participate in the exercise and extend full cooperation to all enumerators and supervisors visiting their areas, providing them with correct, accurate, and updated information. He noted that significant enthusiasm has been observed among the youth regarding self-enumeration.
Jain said actual house-listing and census operations will commence across the state from May 1. He clarified that all information furnished by citizens will be kept strictly confidential, adding that refusal to provide the requisite information to officials or non-cooperation with them constitutes a punishable offence under the Census Act.
“All district administrations in the state have made comprehensive preparations for the conduct of census operations. If any enumerator, supervisor or citizen faces any difficulty, they may contact their concerned supervisor/tehsildar. In addition, the census department’s helpline number, ‘1855’, has also been made available, on which any citizen, enumerator or supervisor may report issues. Appropriate action will be ensured on every complaint/problem,” Jain added.
The census will be conducted in two phases. In the first phase, house-listing work will be carried out from May 1 to May 30, 2026, while in the second phase, the census will be held from February 9 to 28, 2027.
