Census 2027 Self-Enumeration Begins Aug 1: Kolkata Residents Can Fill Details Online
Census 2027 Self-Enumeration Starts Aug 1 in Kolkata

Kolkata: The Census 2027 will introduce a self-enumeration facility, allowing households to voluntarily submit their details online between August 1 and August 15. This marks a significant shift from the traditional door-to-door enumeration process. Residents can log in to the official Census portal at www.se.census.gov.in during this period to fill in their information.

Self-Enumeration Process

Households that choose self-enumeration will receive a unique self-enumeration ID after submitting their details online. This ID will later be verified by enumerators during field visits before being uploaded to the central database. Those who do not opt for self-enumeration will continue to be covered through the conventional door-to-door survey process, officials confirmed.

House Listing Operation Phase-I

The House Listing Operation (HLO) Phase-I will be conducted across West Bengal from August 16 to September 14. During this phase, enumerators will visit households to collect information on housing conditions, household amenities, assets, family particulars, and economic activities. The structured questionnaire comprises 33 notified questions under the Census framework.

Preparations in West Bengal

West Bengal has formally begun preparations for Census 2027, following the state government's approval for the immediate rollout of the exercise, as announced in a gazette notification issued on May 11. As part of the preparations, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will inaugurate a conference of Principal Census Officers at Nabanna Sabhaghar on Friday. Senior officials from the Directorate of Census Operations, West Bengal, along with district-level officers, are expected to attend the programme.

Technology-Driven Census

The upcoming Census is set to be one of the most technology-driven enumeration exercises in the country. According to the Directorate of Census Operations, digital platforms such as the secure HLO mobile application will be used for collecting household responses. The Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) portal will facilitate near real-time monitoring of the exercise. Additionally, satellite-assisted mapping through the House Listing Block Creator Web Portal (HLBC Portal) will be introduced.

Conference Highlights

Officials said that Friday's conference will review the present status of the Census exercise and include the unveiling of the official Census 2027 mascot, named "Pragati and Vikas." The programme will also feature a training session for Principal Census Officers and an address by the Chief Minister on the importance of the Census operation in the state.

Public Cooperation

Issuing a release on Thursday, the Centre said, "Residents have been requested to cooperate with the Census officials in the discharge of their duties and provide complete and accurate information. In this regard, people may even contact the toll-free helpline number 1855 for any necessary information required." The government emphasizes the importance of accurate data collection for policy planning and resource allocation.
