Chandigarh Administration Enforces PNG Adoption for Commercial and Industrial Sectors
In a significant move to bolster energy security and promote sustainable practices, the Chandigarh Administration has issued a mandatory directive for all commercial and industrial LPG consumers to apply for piped natural gas (PNG) connections. This decision was announced during a high-level meeting chaired by UT Chief Secretary H Rajesh Prasad on Tuesday, focusing on the LPG supply scenario amid recent geopolitical tensions and communications from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas regarding the expansion of the City Gas Distribution (CGD) network.
Mandatory PNG Applications and Readiness Requirements
Under the new regulations, commercial and industrial entities using LPG must submit applications for PNG with their designated CGD entity. They are required to complete all necessary preparations to achieve a state of readiness for receiving PNG before becoming eligible for any allocation from the overall 50% commercial LPG quota. This measure aims to streamline the transition and ensure a smooth shift to a more reliable energy source.
Encouraging Residential Switch to PNG
Beyond the mandatory steps for businesses, residents of Chandigarh have been strongly encouraged to adopt PNG wherever it is available. The administration highlights multiple benefits of this switch, including reduced dependence on LPG, a continuous and safe supply of cooking gas, cost-effectiveness, and environmental advantages. Households and commercial establishments are urged to register for PNG connections to actively contribute to the city's sustainable energy transition.
Infrastructure and Operational Enhancements
To facilitate the rapid rollout of PNG infrastructure, the administration has approved a "dig and restore" mechanism. This allows CGD entities to undertake necessary excavation and restoration works efficiently. Additionally, operational relaxations have been granted, permitting round-the-clock work to accelerate the network expansion and ensure timely connectivity for consumers.
Strict Adherence to LPG Quotas and Supply Management
Oil marketing companies have been instructed to coordinate closely with the Department of Food and Supplies and the Deputy Commissioner's office. This collaboration is crucial to enforce strict adherence to LPG quotas, prevent diversion, and maintain an uninterrupted supply to priority sectors, ensuring that essential services remain unaffected during the transition period.
Key Stakeholders in the Meeting
The review meeting saw participation from senior officials of the Chandigarh Administration, including the Home Secretary; Director and Secretary of Food and Supplies and Consumer Affairs and Legal Metrology; Special Secretary of Finance; Deputy Commissioner; Special Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation; Chief Engineer; and District Food and Supplies Officer. Representatives from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Indian Oil Corporation, and Indian Oil Adani Gas Pvt Ltd were also present, underscoring the collaborative effort towards this energy initiative.
This comprehensive approach by the Chandigarh Administration reflects a proactive stance in addressing energy challenges, promoting environmental sustainability, and ensuring a secure and efficient gas supply for all sectors in the city.
