Chandigarh Mayor Takes Action on Critical Fire Safety Failures at Gas Agencies
In a decisive move to address alarming public safety concerns, Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi has ordered an immediate fire safety audit following a surprise inspection that uncovered severe lapses at gas agencies in Sector 25. The inspection, conducted recently, highlighted a dangerous disconnect in administrative coordination that has left these highly sensitive establishments vulnerable to catastrophic fire hazards.
Water Supply Discontinuation Exposes Gas Agencies to Risk
During the inspection, it was revealed that water supply to the gas agencies in Sector 25 has been discontinued for the past eight to nine months. Shockingly, regular water bills have continued to be issued by the Municipal Corporation's Water Supply Department, despite the lack of actual supply. This discrepancy has created a critical situation where gas agency owners are unable to maintain filled water storage tanks as mandated by fire safety norms.
Gas agency owners apprised Mayor Joshi of their predicament, stating that despite paying bills, they have received no water for months. This issue is compounded by the Fire Department issuing notices for non-compliance with water storage requirements, while the essential water needed to meet these standards remains unavailable.
Urgent Context of Recent Fire Incidents
The situation gains heightened urgency against the backdrop of recent fire incidents across Chandigarh. Just days ago, a fire was reported at the Sector 22 mobile market, and another incident occurred earlier today in the Industrial Area. These events underscore the pressing need for robust fire safety measures, particularly at establishments like gas agencies, which are classified as highly vulnerable due to the flammable materials they handle.
Mayor Joshi termed the situation "highly sensitive and unacceptable," emphasizing that even minor lapses at such establishments can lead to devastating consequences. He pointed out that this administrative disconnect not only undermines established safety protocols but also places lives and property at significant risk.
Immediate Directives and Accountability Measures
Taking strong note of the matter, Mayor Joshi has directed senior officers to take swift action. Key directives include:
- Immediate restoration of water supply to the affected gas agencies in Sector 25.
- A thorough investigation into the billing discrepancies to determine why bills were issued without corresponding water supply.
- Initiation of a comprehensive fire safety audit covering the entire area to identify and rectify any other potential hazards.
Additionally, the Mayor has called for a time-bound report on the issue and strict action against officials found responsible for the lapse. Stressing accountability, he warned that any negligence compromising public safety will not be tolerated, reinforcing the administration's commitment to safeguarding citizens.
This proactive response aims to prevent future incidents and ensure that all establishments, especially those in high-risk categories, adhere to stringent safety standards. The move is expected to enhance coordination between municipal departments and improve overall emergency preparedness in Chandigarh.
