Chandigarh Mayor has issued a directive for the immediate desilting of the N-Choe and Patiala Ki Rao drainage channels, emphasizing the need to prepare for the upcoming monsoon season. The move is aimed at mitigating the risk of waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas of the city.
Urgent Call for Action
The Mayor, in a letter to the Municipal Corporation, highlighted that the accumulation of silt and debris in these channels poses a serious threat during heavy rainfall. He stressed that desilting must be completed before the monsoon arrives to ensure unobstructed water flow.
Areas at Risk
Several residential colonies and commercial zones located near these watercourses have faced recurrent flooding in previous years. The Mayor pointed out that timely desilting could significantly reduce the damage to property and inconvenience to residents.
Previous Flooding Incidents
In 2023, heavy rains led to severe waterlogging in sectors along the Patiala Ki Rao, causing traffic jams and damage to homes. The N-Choe also overflowed, affecting nearby villages. These incidents underscored the need for proactive maintenance of drainage infrastructure.
Municipal Corporation's Response
The Municipal Corporation has assured that desilting work will commence soon. Officials have been directed to prioritize these channels and complete the task within a stipulated timeframe. The corporation is also reviewing the overall drainage system to identify other vulnerable points.
Residents' Concerns
Local residents have welcomed the Mayor's initiative but expressed concerns about the pace of work. They urged the authorities to ensure that desilting is thorough and not just a superficial measure. Many recalled that past efforts were often delayed, leading to avoidable flooding.
Long-Term Solutions
Beyond desilting, the Mayor has called for a comprehensive plan to address the city's drainage issues. This includes regular maintenance, widening of channels where necessary, and stricter enforcement against encroachments that obstruct water flow.
The administration is expected to submit a progress report within two weeks. Citizens have been advised to cooperate by not dumping waste into the channels and reporting any blockages promptly.
