The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) has initiated a stringent crackdown on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) godowns that are operating without valid fire safety certificates. This move comes in the wake of increasing concerns over fire hazards and the need to ensure public safety in the city.
Scope of the Crackdown
Teams from the MC's fire department conducted inspections across various sectors, targeting LPG storage facilities that had failed to obtain the mandatory no-objection certificate (NOC) from the fire department. The inspections covered both commercial and residential areas where LPG godowns are located.
Notices Issued and Seals Imposed
During the drive, the MC issued show-cause notices to several godown owners, directing them to explain why their units should not be sealed for non-compliance with fire safety norms. In cases where violations were severe or owners failed to respond, the MC proceeded to seal the premises immediately. Officials stated that the action was necessary to prevent any potential fire incidents that could endanger lives and property.
Legal Framework and Compliance
Under the Chandigarh Fire Safety Act, all LPG storage facilities are required to obtain a fire safety certificate from the MC's fire department. This certificate is granted only after a thorough inspection of the premises, including checks on ventilation, storage capacity, distance from residential areas, and the availability of fire-fighting equipment. The crackdown aims to enforce these regulations strictly.
Response from Godown Owners
Several godown owners expressed concern over the sudden action, claiming that they were in the process of obtaining the necessary certificates. However, MC officials maintained that no leniency would be shown, as the safety of citizens is of paramount importance. They advised all LPG dealers to ensure compliance with fire safety norms to avoid legal action.
Future Measures
The MC plans to conduct regular inspections and surprise checks to ensure that all LPG godowns in the city are operating within the legal framework. Additionally, the fire department will hold awareness sessions for godown owners and staff on fire prevention and emergency response. The corporation also urged residents to report any suspicious or unsafe LPG storage facilities in their neighborhoods.
This crackdown is part of a broader initiative by the Chandigarh MC to enhance urban safety and reduce fire risks across the city. Similar drives are expected in other sectors, including industrial areas and commercial complexes, to ensure comprehensive coverage.
