Chennai Metro Expansion Drives Major Road Clearance Initiative
In a significant move to enhance urban mobility, Chennai is witnessing a major transformation ahead of the imminent launch of Metro rail services on the 14.6-kilometer Poonamallee–Porur stretch. The state highways department has successfully cleared a total of 3,214 long-standing encroachments along the bustling Mount-Poonamallee High Road. This initiative is strategically designed to alleviate severe traffic congestion and bolster road safety for the city's growing population.
Decade-Long Encroachments Cleared for Smoother Commutes
For over a decade, nearly one-third of the 20-foot-wide highway, which serves as a critical link between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction, was occupied by illegal building extensions, pavement shops, and roadside vendors selling items like fast food and meat. These encroachments created persistent traffic bottlenecks, frustrating daily commuters and impeding the flow of vehicles.
During a recent inspection, it was observed that most of these shops have been removed, and building projections extending onto the road have been demolished. The cleared space has significantly widened the carriageway, enabling smoother movement for heavy vehicles and cars alike. A senior official from the state highways department highlighted that this stretch witnesses nearly one lakh vehicles per hour, underscoring the urgency of these improvements.
Road Widening Plans and Community Impact
The official further elaborated on future plans, stating, "The original road width was about 20 feet. With the encroachments now cleared, we are planning to widen it by an additional 2 to 3 feet. Work will commence in a few days and is expected to be completed before April." This expansion is anticipated to further enhance traffic flow and reduce delays.
Residents have long voiced concerns about daily traffic struggles. Mohammed Subhan, a resident of Kattupakkam, shared, "It typically takes 45 to 60 minutes to travel from Poonamallee Junction to the Porur flyover. Despite most Metro work being completed, there are no proper diversion boards or clear signals at many junctions. Officials must install adequate signboards along the entire stretch to guide commuters effectively."
Political Support and Urban Growth Considerations
Porur MLA A Krishnaswamy emphasized the growing population in city suburbs, particularly in Poonamallee and Porur. He remarked, "The floating population has increased significantly in these areas. Clearing the encroachments and widening the roads is a commendable move by the highways department. This will help reduce traffic congestion and allow commuters to drive more freely, improving overall urban livability."
This clearance effort aligns with broader infrastructure developments, including the upcoming Metro services, which are set to revolutionize public transportation in Chennai. By addressing both road safety and traffic efficiency, the initiative aims to create a more seamless commuting experience for all residents.
