CM Joseph Vijay directs local bodies to use funds for Amma Canteen upgrades
CM Vijay orders local funds for Amma Canteen improvements

Chennai: Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has directed corporations and municipalities to utilize local body funds for the improvement of Amma Canteens across the city. An order issued by the municipal administration and water supply (MAWS) department stated that the CM instructed local bodies, including the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), to allocate their own resources for procuring vessels, carrying out building improvements, repainting walls, and purchasing fresh groceries.

Order Details and Complaints

The order, signed by MAWS secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi, highlighted that the department had received complaints regarding poor food quality and substandard service in these canteens. This directive aims to address these issues and enhance the overall dining experience for residents.

Current Status of Canteens

The GCC currently operates approximately 383 canteens, while other municipalities across the state manage 237 such facilities. Since the demise of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, these canteens have been maintained by local bodies using their own funds. However, the key challenge for cash-strapped corporations will now be to allocate sufficient funds for these upgrades.

GCC commissioner Dr G S Sameeran confirmed that work worth Rs 7.4 crore has already commenced to refurbish the canteens. He noted that fewer than 100 canteens require major upgrades, such as installation of new sheds. "I have instructed officials to install new lighting and make the canteens more inviting for people," he said. Additionally, two mobile canteens will be renovated and will travel around Marina Beach and lower-income settlements to serve residents.

Background and Future Plans

The Amma Canteens, launched by the late J Jayalalithaa, have been a popular initiative providing affordable meals to the public. With this new directive, the state government aims to ensure that these canteens continue to offer high-quality food and services. The MAWS department emphasized that local bodies must prioritize these improvements using their own funds, without relying on state government allocations.

Dr Sameeran also mentioned that the refurbishment includes repainting walls, upgrading kitchen equipment, and ensuring a clean and hygienic environment. The mobile canteens, once renovated, will expand access to nutritious meals in underserved areas.
