Damaged bridge footpaths in Mandi's Paddal ward pose risk to pedestrians
Damaged footpaths in Mandi's Paddal ward risk pedestrians

Residents of the Paddal ward under the Mandi Municipal Corporation, along with members of the Senior Citizens Association, have demanded immediate repair and beautification of pedestrian footpaths on both sides of the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) bridge and along the adjoining National Highway-21 up to Bheuli. The damaged footpaths pose a serious threat to pedestrians, particularly senior citizens, students, and daily commuters.

Damaged footpaths and drainage issues

SD Chandla, a resident of the Paddal ward, stated that the footpaths on both sides of the bridge are damaged at several places, making it difficult and unsafe for pedestrians to walk. He highlighted that the lack of a proper drainage system worsens the condition during the monsoon season, leading to waterlogging and slippery surfaces.

Another local resident, Shubham Sharma, said, “We have requested the authorities concerned to lay non-slippery tiles on the footpaths and extend them up to Government Degree College, Panchayat Ghar, and further towards the Bheuli bridge via the Paddal gurdwara.”

Demand for comprehensive road repairs

Residents emphasized that the proposed work would not only ensure pedestrian safety but also enhance the overall appearance of the town. They also highlighted the poor condition of the link road from National Highway-21 towards Paddal Mohalla and the road leading to the ITI Hostel, noting that the area has been neglected for years.

Official response

Paddal ward councillor Nirmal Verma acknowledged the issue, stating that the road and footpaths fall under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department (PWD). She confirmed that she would pursue the matter with the department to expedite repairs.

Municipal Commissioner Rohit Rathour said he has taken up the matter with the PWD and has been assured of timely maintenance of the damaged pedestrian pathways. Meanwhile, Executive Engineer (XEN) of the PWD, DK Verma, informed that tenders for the repair and maintenance of the pedestrian footpaths have been floated. He added that formalities are being completed and the maintenance work will commence soon.
