Delhi Government Implements Ban on Direct LPG Cylinder Sales from Godowns
The Delhi government has announced a significant policy change, imposing a strict ban on the direct sale of LPG cylinders from storage godowns. This move, revealed on Sunday, is part of a broader effort to streamline distribution channels and eliminate irregularities in the liquefied petroleum gas supply chain.
Tough Action Against Violators
Government officials have issued a stern warning, stating that tough action will be taken against any violators of this new regulation. Oil marketing companies have already circulated clear instructions to all distributors, making it explicitly illegal to sell cylinders directly from storage points.
The primary objective of this ban is to plug leakages in the distribution system and ensure that LPG supplies reach consumers exclusively through authorized delivery channels. By eliminating direct sales from godowns, authorities aim to enhance transparency and accountability in the supply chain.
Expanded Access to 5-Kg LPG Cylinders
Simultaneously, the Delhi government has taken steps to expand access to 5-kg LPG cylinders across the city. This initiative is designed to provide much-needed relief to migrant workers and individuals without permanent addresses, who often face challenges in obtaining cooking gas.
Under the new provisions, these smaller cylinders can now be purchased from gas agencies with just a valid identification document, eliminating the previous requirement for address verification. This streamlined process aims to make LPG more accessible to transient populations and those in informal living situations.
Support Infrastructure for Consumers
To facilitate this expanded access, the government has established 11 dedicated helpdesks at select HPCL outlets throughout Delhi. These helpdesks serve as guidance centers, directing consumers to nearby authorized distributors where they can obtain the 5-kg cylinders.
The establishment of these helpdesks represents a proactive approach to consumer assistance, ensuring that individuals seeking the smaller cylinders receive proper guidance and support in navigating the distribution network.
Assurance of Stable Supply
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has provided reassurance regarding the capital's LPG supply situation, stating that it remains "fully stable and under control." She emphasized that the entire system is being closely monitored to prevent any disruptions in service.
The government's dual approach of restricting direct sales while expanding access to smaller cylinders reflects a comprehensive strategy to reform Delhi's LPG distribution system.
