Delhi Government Unveils Major Transport Expansion with Electric Focus
The Delhi government on Friday launched a comprehensive series of transport initiatives designed to significantly strengthen public mobility infrastructure across the capital region. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta personally flagged off a fleet of 300 new electric buses from the Indraprastha depot, marking a substantial expansion of the city's zero-emission public transportation network.
Massive Electric Bus Fleet Expansion
The newly inducted buses represent a major step forward in Delhi's sustainable transport ambitions. These modern vehicles feature low-floor designs with full air-conditioning, comprehensive CCTV surveillance systems, emergency panic buttons, real-time GPS tracking capabilities, and specialized facilities to accommodate passengers with disabilities. With this significant addition, the Delhi Transport Corporation fleet now exceeds 6,100 operational buses.
Government officials have outlined an ambitious long-term vision to scale up the public bus fleet to approximately 14,000 vehicles by the 2028-29 fiscal year. If achieved, this expansion would establish Delhi as home to the largest electric bus network anywhere in India, positioning the capital as a national leader in sustainable urban transportation.
Interstate Connectivity Enhancement
In a parallel development aimed at improving regional connectivity, the government simultaneously launched an interstate electric bus service connecting Nanaksar in Delhi with Ghaziabad's Old Bus Stand. This approximately 21-kilometer route strategically links several important locations including Bhajanpura, Loni Road, the Uttar Pradesh border crossing, Pasonda, Hindon Airport, and Mohan Nagar.
The service will initially operate on a pilot basis with three electric buses running 12 daily trips in both directions. Operating hours will span from 7:15 AM to 10:10 PM, with fares capped at an affordable 53 rupees, creating a budget-friendly commuting option for daily passengers traveling between Delhi and Ghaziabad.
Modern Administrative Infrastructure
Chief Minister Gupta also laid the foundation stone for a new multi-storey Delhi Transport Corporation office building to be constructed near the Indraprastha depot. The facility will occupy approximately 1,800 square meters and incorporate contemporary design elements including a modern lobby area, comfortable waiting lounge, multiple conference rooms, dedicated office spaces, efficient workstations for staff members, and an advanced IP-PBX-based communication system.
The building design emphasizes energy efficiency and incorporates comprehensive fire safety systems. During the construction phase, temporary office arrangements will ensure administrative functions continue without disruption, maintaining operational continuity for Delhi's public transport management.
Electric Vehicle Subsidy Revival
Another crucial component of Friday's announcements involved the relaunch of the government's electric vehicle incentive portal and the resumption of pending subsidy disbursements. Under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2020, financial incentives are provided for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and e-rickshaws, though these subsidies had been stalled for approximately two years.
This development follows a September 2023 High Court directive ordering the Delhi government to take immediate steps to disburse promised subsidies to electric vehicle purchasers. The court explicitly stated that procedural obstacles could not justify payment delays and that the absence of specific timelines in the policy did not exempt the government from its obligations.
Accordingly, subsidy payments that were halted in June 2023 have now resumed with enhanced transparency mechanisms. The system now integrates with the public financial management system and utilizes direct benefit transfer to deposit funds directly into beneficiaries' bank accounts.
In the initial phase, more than 24 crore rupees has been disbursed to 12,877 beneficiaries. Remaining pending payments will be cleared systematically in subsequent phases, while the portal has reopened to accept new applications from electric vehicle purchasers seeking incentives.
Broader Environmental and Mobility Objectives
These comprehensive measures represent a coordinated effort to modernize Delhi's public transport infrastructure while promoting sustainable urban mobility solutions. Government officials emphasized that expanding electric public transportation directly supports air quality improvement goals by reducing vehicular emissions across the capital region.
