The Delhi government on Friday appointed BJP MLA Abhay Kumar Verma as its Chief Spokesperson, while MLA Anil Kumar Sharma and BJP leader Harish Khurana have been named government spokespersons. The appointments have come into effect immediately, as announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
Appointments Aim to Improve Governance Communication
Announcing the appointments, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the move was aimed at strengthening transparent, accountable and citizen-centric governance by ensuring timely dissemination of official information on the government’s policies, decisions and public welfare initiatives.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the Chief Spokesperson and spokespersons will present the Delhi government’s authorised position on key issues, communicate official information on policy decisions, development works and welfare schemes and engage with the media on behalf of the government. They will also issue clarifications on government decisions whenever required and convey the government’s perspective based on authorised information received from various government departments.
Effective Public Communication as a Democratic Pillar
Gupta said effective public communication is a vital pillar of democratic governance and that the appointments would further strengthen the dialogue between the government and citizens. She said the mechanism would ensure that authentic, transparent and timely information related to governance reaches the public in an organised manner while reinforcing the dissemination of information on the government’s welfare initiatives.
The appointments are seen as a strategic move to streamline government messaging and ensure consistent communication across media platforms. With three designated spokespersons, the Delhi government aims to cover a broader range of topics and respond promptly to queries.
Roles and Responsibilities Defined
The Chief Spokesperson and spokespersons are expected to coordinate with various government departments to gather accurate information before making public statements. They will serve as the primary points of contact for journalists seeking official comments on government policies and decisions.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Delhi government to enhance transparency and public trust. By appointing experienced leaders like Abhay Verma, Anil Kumar Sharma, and Harish Khurana, the government hopes to improve its outreach and ensure that citizens are well-informed about developmental activities and welfare programs.
