Delhi Government Announces Comprehensive Third-Party Fire Safety Audits

In a decisive move to enhance urban safety, the Delhi government has mandated third-party fire audits for every establishment across the city. This initiative aims to identify and rectify potential safety gaps, ensuring rigorous compliance with fire safety standards.

Immediate Response to Tragic Incident

The announcement was made by Home Minister Ashish Sood on Thursday, just one day after a devastating fire in a residential-cum-commercial building in Palam claimed nine lives, including three children from the same family. This tragedy has underscored the urgent need for strengthened fire safety protocols.

"Moving beyond standard protocol, we have mandated that every single establishment — including those located away in residential areas — must strictly adhere to safety rules," stated Sood. "To achieve this with speed and precision, we have ordered third-party experts to map and audit every establishment in the city. Every worker and every family deserves to feel safe, no matter where they are. We are ending the era of blind spots in our city's safety."

Scope and Details of the Fire Audits

The comprehensive inspections will evaluate multiple critical aspects of fire preparedness and emergency response. Key areas of focus include:

  • Electrical safety systems and wiring
  • Functionality of fire alarms and detection systems
  • Availability and condition of sprinklers and fire extinguishers
  • Accessibility and adequacy of emergency exits
  • Overall evacuation readiness and procedures

All assessments will be conducted in strict alignment with established national fire safety norms, ensuring a uniform and high standard of evaluation.

Role of Certified Third-Party Experts

The audits will be carried out by certified fire safety experts or affiliated agencies, bringing an independent and professional perspective to the process. An official explained, "The third-party experts will use national fire safety standards to evaluate each property. This audit will generate actionable recommendations, foster greater accountability, and ultimately lead to significantly improved safety standards across Delhi."

Home Minister Sood emphasized the proactive nature of this policy: "By expanding our reach into residential business hubs and involving independent experts, we are building a secure Delhi where safety is never compromised. We will not wait for accidents to happen; we will prevent them before they start."

Ongoing Investigations and Broader Safety Drive

Concurrently, a magisterial inquiry into the Palam Village fire has been initiated, following an order from Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. An official noted, "A dedicated team is working on the magisterial inquiry, and the preliminary report is expected to be submitted shortly."

This audit directive follows a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority held on Wednesday, which resulted in orders to conduct a widespread fire audit across the entire capital. The initiative represents a significant escalation in the government's commitment to public safety, aiming to transform Delhi into a model of urban fire prevention and preparedness.
