Delhi Mayor Inspects Bhalswa Landfill, Targets Full Clearance

New Delhi: Delhi's newly elected mayor, Pravesh Wahi, conducted an inspection of the Bhalswa landfill site on Thursday to assess the progress of bio-mining and bioremediation operations. Following the visit, he also toured the CNG biogas plant located at Ghoga.

Mayor's Assessment and Commitment

Mayor Wahi stated that the ongoing drive to eliminate the city's garbage mountains continues, with regular site visits to monitor the speed and quality of biomining activities. He expressed satisfaction with the work, saying, 'I found the biomining work satisfactory and am confident that by the end of December this year, the flattening of the landfill site will be completed and the legacy waste fully disposed of.'

Future Plans for the Reclaimed Land

After the complete removal of legacy waste, a green belt will be developed at the Bhalswa landfill site. The reclaimed land will be utilized for public welfare activities in consultation with the Delhi government, according to the mayor.

Disposal operations commenced in November 2022, and during the first phase, about 45 lakh metric tonnes were cleared. The second phase began in December 2024, processing an additional 43.44 lakh metric tonnes of waste.

Currently, around 28 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste remain at the site, which is scheduled to be processed by the end of this year. The maximum height of the waste mound, which once reached 65 metres, has now been reduced to about 30 metres.
