Delhi MCD Zones Set for Name Alignment with Revenue Districts
In a significant administrative move, the names of the 12 zones under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are poised to be aligned with the names of Delhi government's revenue districts. An official order regarding this alignment is expected to be issued shortly, following the proposal's approval by the MCD.
Proposal Details and Approval Process
The Delhi government is set to finalize the new names in consultation with district magistrates before forwarding the proposal to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The ministry is likely to notify the changes promptly once the proposal is received. "Either the existing zone name will be adopted for the district or the district name will be given to the zone to bring uniformity. The proposal will then be sent to the Centre," an official explained.
Currently, Delhi has 13 revenue districts, with New Delhi functioning as a separate revenue district under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). In contrast, the MCD oversees 12 zones. This discrepancy has led to administrative complexities that the renaming initiative aims to address.
Objectives and Benefits of the Alignment
Officials have clarified that the primary goal of this renaming exercise is to streamline administrative processes for both the government and residents. There is no proposal to alter the jurisdiction or boundaries of the municipal zones, ensuring that the changes are purely nominal.
"Both Delhi government and MCD deal with administrative work, and bringing uniformity in the jurisdiction or boundaries of districts and zones will also bring greater consonance in actions taken and decisions finalised across areas," an official stated. This alignment is expected to eliminate confusion during activities such as anti-encroachment drives or event planning meetings, where it will be clearer which officials need to participate.
For residents, the change promises to simplify bureaucratic processes. Currently, individuals often have to navigate multiple offices, sometimes approaching different districts or even two separate zones to complete their work. The alignment aims to reduce this hassle, making administrative interactions more straightforward and efficient.
Current Correspondences Between Zones and Districts
The existing overlaps between MCD zones and revenue districts highlight the need for this alignment:
- Most areas under the Old Delhi revenue district correspond with the City Sadar–Paharganj zone of the MCD.
- The Central district largely overlaps with the Karol Bagh zone.
- Outer Delhi district includes areas falling under the Narela zone.
- The East district corresponds mostly with Shahdara South zone areas.
- The North-East district aligns with Shahdara North zone areas.
- Areas under the South district fall within the South zone.
- The majority of the West district areas come under the West zone.
- The Central North district, which includes Shakur Basti, Shalimar Bagh, and Model Town subdivisions, largely falls under the Keshavpuram zone.
- The South-West district comprises Najafgarh, Matiala, Dwarka, and Bijwasan subdivisions, most of which fall under the Najafgarh zone.
- The North-West district includes Kirari, Nangloi Jat, and Rohini areas, which fall under the Rohini zone—making it a likely candidate to be renamed after the district.
- The South-East district includes Jangpura, Kalkaji, and Badarpur subdivisions, with most of these areas falling under the Central zone of the MCD.
This detailed mapping underscores the practical basis for the renaming initiative, which seeks to harmonize the administrative frameworks of Delhi's local governance structures.
