Delhi Police Introduces Major Recruitment Amendment for Former Agniveers

In a significant policy move, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has officially approved a crucial amendment to Rule 9 of the Delhi Police (Appointment & Recruitment) Rules, 1980. This landmark decision reserves a substantial 20% of all male constable (executive) posts specifically for former Agniveers who have completed their service under the Agnipath scheme.

Key Benefits and Exemptions for Former Agniveers

The amendment provides substantial advantages to eligible candidates from the Agniveer program. Former Agniveers will receive complete exemption from the mandatory physical efficiency test that is typically required for all police constable applicants. Additionally, they will benefit from a significant relaxation of three years in the prescribed upper age limit, which is normally set at 25 years for direct recruitment.

For candidates belonging to the very first batch of the Agnipath scheme, which was launched in 2022, the age relaxation is even more generous. These pioneering Agniveers will receive an extended age relaxation of five years, making them particularly well-positioned to transition into law enforcement roles with the Delhi Police.

Impact on Delhi Police Recruitment Structure

The Delhi Police currently has 42,451 sanctioned posts for male constable (executive) positions. These roles are filled through a direct recruitment process that traditionally requires candidates to be between 18 and 25 years of age. With this new amendment, a substantial number of former Agniveers will become eligible for these positions, potentially transforming the recruitment landscape of one of India's largest police forces.

The Agnipath scheme was introduced by the Government of India in 2022 as a transformative recruitment program for the Indian Armed Forces. It aims to attract young Indian citizens to serve in the military for a four-year period, after which a percentage of Agniveers are retained for regular service while others return to civilian life with valuable skills and experience.

Strategic Objectives Behind the Amendment

These amendments are strategically designed to ensure a smoother and more effective transition for former Agniveers into important law enforcement roles within the Delhi Police. The policy recognizes the valuable four-year service that these individuals have completed in the Armed Forces and formally acknowledges their prior military training, discipline, and operational experience.

By creating this dedicated reservation and providing meaningful exemptions, the Delhi administration aims to leverage the specialized skills and discipline that former Agniveers have developed during their military service. This initiative represents a thoughtful integration of defense personnel into civilian law enforcement, potentially enhancing the overall capabilities and professionalism of the Delhi Police force while providing meaningful career opportunities for those who have served the nation.
