Delhi to Construct 8 Foot Over Bridges at High-Risk Accident Zones for Pedestrian Safety
In a significant move to enhance pedestrian safety and streamline urban mobility, the Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi has approved the construction of eight foot over bridges (FoBs) at busy and accident-prone locations across the city. This initiative aims to address critical safety concerns and reduce risks for commuters navigating high-traffic areas.
Modern Solutions for a Growing Metropolis
PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh emphasized the necessity of modern infrastructure solutions to support Delhi's rapid growth. "Delhi's expansion demands contemporary approaches to urban planning. No individual should ever have to endanger their life simply while crossing a road," he stated. The FoBs will be strategically erected at sites where safety issues are most pronounced, ensuring both secure pedestrian passage and improved vehicular flow.
Accountability and Timely Execution
To prevent delays that have historically plagued infrastructure projects, clear deadlines have been established for this endeavor. "We are shifting away from the era of sluggish development. Construction activities will commence by February, with all projects slated for completion within a predetermined timeframe. Speed and accountability are now fundamental priorities," Singh affirmed in an official statement.
Strategic Site Selection Process
Officials revealed that the PWD received numerous suggestions and requests from approximately 15-16 locations for FoB construction. Following a thorough review by the department's FoB committee, which assessed feasibility based on multiple criteria, eight sites were finalized. The selection process involved comprehensive on-ground evaluations, considering factors such as:
- High volumes of traffic and pedestrian movement
- Historical accident data and vulnerability
- Daily convenience for commuters
Identified Locations for FoB Construction
The eight approved sites include:
- Madhuban Chowk
- Welcome-cut (GT Road)
- Shahbad Dairy
- Ber Sarai Market
- Lal Bahadur Shastri Sanskrit Vidyapeeth
- Okhla Sabzi Mandi
- Janakpuri Jeevan Park Bus Stand
- Mata Chanan Devi Hospital
Ensuring Seamless Project Implementation
Minister Singh has issued directives to all involved agencies to coordinate efforts in site preparation, utility relocation, and approval processes. This coordinated approach is designed to eliminate bottlenecks and facilitate uninterrupted progress throughout the construction phase. By addressing these logistical aspects proactively, the PWD aims to deliver these safety enhancements efficiently and effectively.
