Delhi's Landfills to be Flattened by 2026, CM Rekha Gupta Announces in New Year Vision
Delhi's Garbage Mountains to be Eliminated by 2026: CM

In a significant New Year announcement, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has set a definitive deadline to tackle one of the capital's most persistent eyesores and environmental hazards. She declared that the towering landfills of Delhi will be completely flattened by the year 2026, marking a pivotal step in the city's urban renewal.

A Year of Preparation vs. A Year of Delivery

Outlining her government's roadmap, CM Gupta framed 2025 as a year of groundwork and 2026 as the period for tangible results. "2025 was a year of preparation while 2026 would take the initiatives 'to their destination'," she stated. She emphasized that the coming year would be focused on fulfilling the promises made to the people of Delhi.

Reflecting on the past year's achievements, the Chief Minister listed several key initiatives. These included the introduction of an Education Act designed to curb arbitrary school fee hikes, the rollout of free medical treatment coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, and the launch of subsidized Atal Canteens providing meals at just Rs 5.

Tackling Legacy Issues and Environmental Concerns

Gupta asserted that her administration undertook significant work that "Delhi was waiting for a long time," despite what she described as attempts by the opposition AAP to distract with issues like air quality (AQI). On the environmental front, she highlighted the commencement of end-to-end road carpeting, the introduction of advanced cleaning machinery, and a crackdown on bonfires and open burning.

However, she acknowledged that these were just beginnings. "Delhi faces numerous problems and long-standing legacy issues, all of which must be resolved in 2026," Gupta said. The centerpiece of this resolution is the eradication of the city's garbage mountains.

The Roadmap to a Cleaner Delhi

The process to address the waste crisis is already in motion. The government inaugurated Delhi's first biogas plant in 2025, with plans for many more such facilities. Steps have also been initiated to set up plants dedicated to treating electronic waste (e-waste).

Taking a firm stance, CM Gupta had a clear message for her critics: "To those who created these garbage mountains and now speak about their removal, I wish to respond clearly: in 2026, Delhi's garbage mountains will be eliminated." She framed this mission as part of aligning Delhi with the broader national Vision 2047.

Concluding her New Year address, Rekha Gupta extended her wishes to the citizens, expressing hope that 2026 would bring a new dawn of happiness and solutions to Delhi's persistent problems, driven by the will of its people.
