Delhi's Signature Bridge to Get 5-Year Maintenance Plan by PWD

Delhi's Signature Bridge to Receive Comprehensive Five-Year Maintenance Plan

In a significant development for Delhi's infrastructure, the Public Works Department (PWD) has officially assumed maintenance responsibility for the iconic Signature Bridge. The department is now moving forward with the appointment of a specialized consultant to draft a detailed and structured five-year upkeep plan for this landmark structure.

Background and Transfer of Responsibility

The Signature Bridge, originally constructed by the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) at a cost of Rs 1,518.3 crore, was initially maintained by the tourism body for a period of three years following its completion. However, after this maintenance period concluded, DTTDC encountered substantial financial constraints that hindered its ability to continue upkeep operations. Consequently, officials confirmed the decision to transfer maintenance responsibilities to the PWD, which possesses extensive experience in managing road repairs and related infrastructure projects throughout the capital city.

Strategic Importance and Architectural Features

Strategically positioned over the Yamuna River, the Signature Bridge serves as a vital transportation link connecting the Outer Ring Road with northeast Delhi's Karawal Nagar and Bhajanpura areas. It provides a direct and efficient route for commuters traveling between Loni, Rajendra Nagar, Ghaziabad, northeast Delhi, and central locations such as ITO. The bridge is distinguished by its 154-metre-high pylon, which stands as the tallest structure in Delhi and significantly defines the city's skyline. Additionally, its viewing box and skywalk have emerged as popular attractions, drawing numerous visitors and enhancing the bridge's status as both a functional infrastructure asset and a tourist destination.

Comprehensive Maintenance Assessment and Planning

The PWD's initiative involves a thorough and methodical approach to preserving this critical landmark. According to official documents, the appointed consultant will conduct extensive site visits and visual inspections as a foundational step. Following these assessments, the consultant will prepare a detailed schedule for future testing and inspections, ensuring all aspects of the bridge are meticulously evaluated.

The assignment mandates the consultant to outline specific repair methodologies and submit preliminary cost estimates for inspection, testing, and maintenance activities. The assessment will encompass all key components of the bridge, including:

  • The superstructure and substructure
  • Expansion joints and bearings
  • Steel deck and pylon
  • Stay cables

Furthermore, the evaluation will extend to the glass façade, skywalk ramp, bridge health monitoring system, under-deck system, and substation building. Any additional elements identified by the engineer in charge will also be reviewed to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Five-Year Maintenance Blueprint and Protocols

The consultant's primary deliverable will be a detailed five-year maintenance blueprint. This plan will define monthly inspection protocols to ensure regular monitoring, preventive maintenance procedures to address wear and tear proactively, and an emergency response strategy designed to manage unforeseen damage effectively. A consolidated estimate for all proposed activities will be included in the final submission, providing a clear financial framework for the maintenance efforts.

This structured approach aims to safeguard the structural integrity and longevity of the Signature Bridge, ensuring it continues to serve as a vital transportation link and iconic landmark for Delhi residents and visitors alike.
