Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation Initiates Strict Action Against Encroachments
In a decisive effort to reclaim public spaces and bolster pedestrian safety, the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) launched a comprehensive enforcement drive on Tuesday. This operation specifically targeted illegal encroachments across several prominent commercial zones within the city.
Targeted Areas and Immediate Actions
The special drive was executed simultaneously in multiple locations, including Hanuman Singhania Road, Cole Road, Graham Bazar, and the vicinity of the New Market. DMC teams focused on vendors and shop owners who were obstructing footpaths with their merchandise, as well as those utilizing public roads for storing construction materials. During the inspections, numerous offenders were identified and booked, with each violator facing an on-the-spot fine of Rs 2,000.
Zero-Tolerance Policy and Official Statements
DMC Commissioner Jay Vikas emphasized the administration's adoption of a zero-tolerance policy towards such encroachments. He stated that the primary objective is to restore order and ensure that the city's infrastructure serves its intended purposes effectively. Strict fines have been imposed to maintain a safe, clean, and obstruction-free urban environment, he noted.
Vikas elaborated, Footpaths are designed for pedestrians, not for displaying goods or parking vehicles. Similarly, public roads cannot be treated as personal storage yards for construction materials. These activities not only contribute to traffic congestion but also pose significant safety risks to the public.
Warnings and Continued Enforcement
The commissioner revealed that the civic body had previously issued multiple warnings, urging traders and residents to voluntarily clear encroachments. However, due to widespread non-compliance, the DMC was compelled to initiate punitive measures. We had earlier issued strict advisories to refrain from such activities. Unfortunately, many individuals chose to ignore these warnings. Today's drive sends a clear message that the DMC is serious about enforcement, Vikas added.
He further assured that this initiative is not a one-time event; the drive will be extended to other parts of the city in the coming days to ensure comprehensive compliance.
Public Response and Broader Context
Residents and commuters have largely welcomed the crackdown, expressing relief as previously choked pathways are now being cleared. This enforcement gains additional significance in light of the Assam government's vision to develop Dibrugarh as the state's second capital. With rapid urbanization and increased investment flowing into the city, the DMC has been intensifying efforts to enhance civic amenities and urban management.
