Delhi Jal Board Greenlights Comprehensive Water Service Reforms
In a significant move to overhaul Delhi's water infrastructure, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has approved a series of ambitious projects targeting billing reforms, sewer connectivity expansion, and pollution control in the Yamuna river. These initiatives are designed to tackle persistent issues in water services and restore public confidence in the system.
Digital Transformation of Water Billing System
Chaired by Water Minister Parvesh Verma, the board has prioritized addressing everyday problems faced by residents, including inflated water bills, faulty or non-functional meters, irregular water delivery, and inadequate sewer infrastructure in numerous colonies. A cornerstone decision involves the rollout of a city-wide door-to-door e-KYC and digital database update drive covering approximately 35 lakh consumers.
Estimated at Rs 60 crore, this initiative will introduce technology-enabled meter readings featuring photo capture technology, GPS tagging, and proof of bill submission. Officials stated that this move aims to eliminate billing discrepancies and ensure accountability in service delivery. The project is expected to create verified digital records for all registered consumers within six months, thereby reducing disputes and improving operational efficiency.
Minister Verma emphasized that the initiative seeks to address these gaps at the ground level and build a transparent and reliable system that residents can trust.
Major Sewer Connectivity Expansion in Kirari
In a substantial push for sanitation infrastructure, DJB has approved large-scale 'house service sewer connections' in Kirari and adjoining areas. This project will cover multiple catchments, including Pratap Vihar, Prem Nagar, and Bhagya Vihar, benefiting several lakh residents across dozens of colonies and villages.
Officials explained that the project will provide much-needed relief to households that have long depended on inadequate and unhygienic arrangements due to the absence of proper sewer systems. This expansion is anticipated to significantly improve public health conditions and contribute to cleaner neighborhoods throughout the affected areas.
Yamuna River Pollution Control Measures
Regarding river rejuvenation efforts, DJB has cleared several measures aimed at curbing pollution in the Yamuna at its source. These include a Rs 71-crore project for in-situ treatment of wastewater in the Delhi Gate drain. Additionally, the pondage area upstream of Wazirabad barrage will be revived to enhance water quality and storage capacity.
The focus remains on intercepting and treating sewage before it enters the river, representing a crucial step in ongoing efforts to clean the Yamuna's flow. Officials highlighted that these measures are essential for addressing the long-standing pollution challenges facing Delhi's primary waterway.
These comprehensive reforms represent a multi-pronged approach to addressing Delhi's water infrastructure challenges, combining technological innovation with essential physical infrastructure development and environmental protection measures.
