Flashfloods Disrupt Doda-Kishtwar Highway, Vehicles Buried at Kwar Project
Heavy flashfloods in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district have blocked the critical Doda-Kishtwar highway, burying several vehicles at the under-construction Kwar hydroelectric power project. The incident occurred late on 5 July 2026, following intense rainfall in the region.
Authorities Launch Restoration Efforts
According to officials from the Jammu and Kashmir administration, road clearance and restoration work has been initiated immediately. Commuters have been advised to avoid the highway until further notice. The district administration has deployed teams to assess the damage and expedite debris removal.
A spokesperson for the Kwar power project confirmed that multiple vehicles were trapped under mud and debris at the construction site. No casualties have been reported so far, but rescue operations are ongoing to ensure the safety of workers and local residents.
Impact on Connectivity and Power Project
The Doda-Kishtwar highway is a vital link for transportation and supplies in the region. The flashfloods have severely disrupted movement, stranding travelers and delaying essential goods. The Kwar project, a key hydroelectric initiative, has also faced temporary suspension of work as teams focus on clearing the site.
Local authorities have urged people to stay alert and follow safety advisories. The Meteorological Department has forecast more rainfall in the coming days, raising concerns of further landslides and flooding.
