Ghaziabad Launches Integrated Traffic Management System with AI-Powered Enforcement
Ghaziabad ITMS Launched with Automatic Challan System

Ghaziabad Activates Advanced Traffic Management System with AI Enforcement

Ghaziabad has officially rolled out its state-of-the-art Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) on Saturday, marking a significant leap in urban traffic regulation through technological innovation. The system, funded under the Smart City initiative with an investment of Rs 53 crore, incorporates cutting-edge features including automatic number-plate recognition and red-light violation detection capabilities.

Inaugural Inspection and First Enforcement Action

During the system's activation, UP principal secretary Amrit Abhijat conducted a comprehensive inspection of the newly established command centre located at the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation office. In a symbolic demonstration of the system's operational readiness, mayor Sunita Dayal issued the first traffic challan through the ITMS platform. This inaugural enforcement action targeted a scooter rider caught without a helmet at Hapur Chungi, captured through the system's live monitoring feed.

Trial Phase and Official Integration Timeline

Municipal commissioner Vikaramaditya Singh Malik outlined the implementation roadmap, stating, "The process of issuing challans through ITMS has commenced and will continue for at least one month before assimilation of the system with the traffic department takes place. Following this trial period, the project will be officially inaugurated." The system, though completed earlier, experienced delays due to the absence of a formal launch ceremony and will now undergo rigorous testing during this month-long operational trial.

Comprehensive Surveillance Network Deployment

The ambitious project has established an extensive surveillance infrastructure with cameras installed at 78 strategic locations across Ghaziabad. Key junctions and roundabouts equipped with monitoring capabilities include:

  • Hapur Tri-junction to Mohan Nagar
  • Mohan Nagar to Seemapuri border
  • Tulsi Niketan to Nag Dwar
  • Elevated Road to Hapur Chungi
  • ALT to Meerut Tri-junction
  • Hapur Chungi to Atma Ram Steels
  • Old Bus-Stand to Ambedkar Road
  • Hapur Tri-junction to Lal Kuan

Advanced Technological Features and 24/7 Monitoring

The ITMS incorporates sophisticated Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology that will be deployed across all monitoring locations. This system automatically captures images of speeding vehicles and other traffic violations, with challans being directly dispatched to the registered addresses of offending drivers. The entire network operates under continuous surveillance, providing round-the-clock monitoring capabilities to traffic authorities.

Project History and Implementation Journey

The ITMS project traces its origins to 2019 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid its foundation stone with an initial expectation of becoming operational within one year. However, the implementation process extended over seven years before finally achieving operational status. Officials emphasize that the system will serve multiple functions beyond traffic enforcement, including live road monitoring, traffic regulation optimization, and supporting crime prevention initiatives through its comprehensive surveillance network.

This technological advancement represents Ghaziabad's commitment to modernizing urban infrastructure and enhancing public safety through intelligent transportation solutions. The successful implementation of ITMS is expected to set a benchmark for other cities in Uttar Pradesh and across India seeking to leverage technology for improved traffic management and urban governance.
