GMDA Launches Major Service Road Initiative to Ease Gurgaon Traffic
In a significant move to address persistent traffic issues, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has formulated an ambitious plan to repair and construct service roads along three critical corridors within the city. With a total estimated cost of Rs 15.47 crore, this initiative targets approximately 3.5 kilometers of road infrastructure, with tenders already issued to kickstart the projects.
First Major Overhaul for Sector 5-6 Service Road
One of the focal points of this plan is the special repair of the 1.2-kilometer service road that runs along the master road dividing sectors 5 and 6. Budgeted at Rs 6.3 crore, this project is scheduled for completion over a 12-month period. This marks the first substantial intervention on this stretch since GMDA assumed control of the asset from the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) in 2018.
This vital corridor connects Sheetla Mata Road with Old Railway Road, traversing a densely populated residential area. A senior GMDA official emphasized the urgency of the repairs, stating, "The stretch has been in poor condition and has not undergone any substantial repair since the takeover. We are now taking up strengthening of the service road along with associated works to improve overall road usability."
Upgrading the Krishna Chowk to Rezangla Chowk Link
Another key component involves the upgrade of the 1.6-kilometer service road from Krishna Chowk to Rezangla Chowk, with an allocation of Rs 6.7 crore. This project, also expected to be finalized within a year, will encompass comprehensive improvements to drainage systems and pedestrian facilities.
This stretch serves as a crucial link for the older parts of Gurgaon, experiencing heavy traffic flow throughout the day. Notably, the upcoming metro corridor is set to pass through this area, further underscoring its importance. The official elaborated, "Along with the strengthening of the service road, proper connectivity of drainage, footpaths and lowering down of greenbelt to ease waterlogging will be undertaken. The work will address the gaps while also improving the riding surface."
New Service Road Construction for Sectors 33 and 48
In addition to repairs, GMDA has proposed the construction of a brand-new service road along the master road dividing sectors 33 and 48. This 700-meter stretch, estimated to cost Rs 2.47 crore, is projected for completion within six months. This corridor is strategically important as it connects Subhash Chowk with Hero Honda Chowk.
The new service lane is specifically designed to streamline vehicular movement and minimize abrupt entries onto the main carriageway. The official explained the rationale, "At present, vehicles often merge abruptly onto the main road, which leads to bottlenecks. Service road will be constructed on one side towards SEZ to give relief to heavy traffic movement around it due to IT offices."
Collectively, these three projects represent a targeted effort by GMDA to enhance Gurgaon's urban mobility, reduce congestion hotspots, and improve the daily commute for thousands of residents and professionals in the bustling city.
