Goa Announces Stringent Measures to Curb Speeding and Modernize Transport
In a decisive move to enhance road safety, Goa Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho declared on Thursday that drivers caught speeding on five consecutive occasions will face the revocation of their driving licence. This stern policy aims to instill responsible driving behavior across the state.
Zero Tolerance for Speeding Offenses
Minister Godinho emphasized the gravity of the new rule, stating, "If you are caught overspeeding five times continuously, you will lose your licence. Nobody will dare to speed. Goa will be a safer place." The announcement was made during a session in the legislative assembly, highlighting the government's commitment to reducing traffic accidents and fatalities.
To support this initiative, the transport department plans to install 191 vehicle-tracking cameras across key routes. These cameras are expected to automatically monitor speeding violations, thereby discouraging reckless driving and contributing to a significant reduction in road mishaps. Godinho expressed confidence that this technological intervention will foster a culture of compliance and safety among motorists.
Digital Transformation for Transport Services
Beyond road safety, Minister Godinho addressed the urgent need for digitization within the state's transport infrastructure. He revealed that the Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) board has decided to implement a comprehensive digital overhaul. "I urge the Kadamba chairman to implement it. Don't delay. I want to tell the managing director also, it was delayed. I will not tolerate it," he asserted, underscoring his determination to see the project through.
The digitization drive is poised to streamline operations and boost revenue for KTCL, which Godinho clarified is not intended to be a profit-making entity. He pledged that both KTCL services and the broader transport department would be fully online by the end of the year, ensuring greater efficiency and transparency.
Addressing Public Transport and Vehicle Policies
In response to criticisms regarding KTCL's bus shortages, Godinho assured the assembly, "I will get new buses," signaling efforts to improve public transportation accessibility. Additionally, he mentioned that a policy allowing residents to retain their vehicle registration numbers is in the pipeline, which could simplify administrative processes for vehicle owners.
The minister also touched upon concerns from MLAs about restrictions on renewing licences for rent-a-cab and rent-a-bike vehicles. Currently, the government halts licence renewals once a vehicle exceeds 12 years of age. While no immediate changes were announced, this issue remains under consideration as part of broader transport reforms.
Overall, these measures reflect Goa's proactive approach to creating safer roads and modernizing its transport ecosystem, with a clear focus on enforcement, technology, and public service enhancement.
