Goa RND to Install New Floating Jetty at Chorao for Ferry Standby

Goa's River Navigation Department Announces New Floating Jetty Project at Chorao

The River Navigation Department (RND) in Goa has unveiled detailed plans to install a new 12-meter long floating jetty at Chorao. This infrastructure development is specifically designed to moor ferryboats that are kept on standby for the crucial Chorao to Ribandar route, aiming to improve transportation efficiency and reliability for commuters.

Enhancing Ferry Operations with Strategic Infrastructure

Once operational, this floating jetty will mark the second such facility at the Chorao site. In 2024, the department had already constructed a 12-meter floating jetty-cum-pontoon at Chorao, with an investment of Rs 96.6 lakh. The new jetty is intended to serve as a dedicated docking point for standby ferryboats during nighttime hours, addressing current logistical challenges.

Department director Vikramsinh Rajebhosale explained the operational benefits: "The jetty will be used for standby docking of ferry boats at night. We aim to keep at least two ferryboats on standby on the Chorao side. Currently, only one ferry boat is kept on standby at Ribandar, which is not sufficient. Our goal is to have two to three ferry boats on standby at Chorao to ensure smoother operations and reduce delays."

Advanced Features and Additional Fleet Upgrades

The floating jetty will be equipped with a marine-grade aluminium gangway, providing safe and easy access from the shore wall to the floating structure. This feature enhances passenger safety and convenience, aligning with modern maritime standards.

In addition to the Chorao project, the River Navigation Department is preparing to deploy two larger ferry boats on the Panaji-Betim route. Rajebhosale highlighted the advancements in these vessels: "These are not like the conventional ferry boats. They are faster, bigger, and currently undergoing rigorous trials to ensure optimal performance and safety."

This initiative reflects the department's commitment to upgrading Goa's river navigation infrastructure, focusing on both immediate needs and long-term sustainability. By increasing standby capacity and introducing modern ferryboats, the RND aims to enhance commuter experience and support the region's transportation network effectively.
